I was checking the latest RPP offerings on eBay and stumbled across this shocking photo of three members of the London Scottish.

Oh, the horrible toll of war…

Ohhhhh…My eyes!
Isn't that against the Geneva Convention?

Ah, the famous sporran parade. Rest assured, gentlemen, this is a tradition that is still celebrated in Highland regiments around the world.

At least its not Zardoz!

Why are they smiling so much?

Jerzei Balowski27 Apr 2008 10:35 a.m. PST

Is there a cure for sporrans?

Neotacha27 Apr 2008 10:36 a.m. PST

What are the bands around their arms?

mattblackgod27 Apr 2008 11:24 a.m. PST

Restraints perhaps?

I have heard that you can get a cream and anitbiotics for the marignal cases. However full blown sporrans must be surgically removed.

"Why are they smiling so much?"

Sporrans are hairy. They probably tickle ;o)

This photo does not shock me. In fact it bears out information to be found in the regimental history published in the 1920s. The Colonel of 1st/14th County of London Regiment (London Scotish) complained bitterly to the powers that be that the battalion had left England in such a rush to reinforce the BEF following the retreat from Mons and the race to the sea, that a large ammount of equipment and clothing had been left behind. Indeed Lt. Archie "Smiler" McPherson recalled the battalion's first taste of action on 31st October, 1914 as follows: "Hoots, 'twas a braw bricht moonlicht nicht made all the worse by our nakedness. As the germans advanced on our positions on the ridge they were shocked to find B company wearing naught but the regiimental sporran and a glengarry cap. They turned tail and ran." This photo is a testimony to the bravery of the Territorials that checked the advance of the beastly hun!

Quoth Tommy Atkins: "Hoots, 'twas a braw bricht moonlicht nicht"

If the lads were wearing sporrans and naught else, then no doubt the full moon was revealed!

Just the regimetal sporran? You mean they only had one and were sharing it? Is that what they call "hot-sporraning"?

They forgot the blue paint.
