Where can I find such a template to make maps that have a hexagonal overlay and what software would I use?

For a template try sewing shops, they use metal and plastic hexagonal templates for making quilts.

In the Arcane Warfare Project Yahoo Group you'll find a free program that outputs a bitmap grid – basic.
You cannot resize the hexes within the program buy may use any image soft for that.
You can replace the basic bitmaps with your own patterns, keeping the name and pixel size.
It only costs you to join: you can leave latter.
As always, feedback is welcome, though currently I have no time for coding.
