I was just vreading about the copyright recovery of the Superman creator's family – which mentioned a 1976 laew that has provisions for someone (or heirs) to recover a copyright in some situations.

I am trying to find a reference on this as I have been involed with trying to help the family of a WW2 personage recover the rights to a book which his wife sold off for next to nothing years ago and is is sitting idle as the publishers try and hold it for ransome.

Anyone know about this?

There are numerous reports on this, and a quick google search turns up lots of facts.

Start here for more on Superboy:

Here for Superman (the whole article has some good stuff on the years in which you can file):

thanks, tha answered my question that it all stems from you making a sale of the copyright for 56 years, then later find it has been extended for X more yers.
