I am visiting Lugano for a week in July – any ideas of interesting military things to see? We will have rail cards and won't mind traveling a little way

Well, you will have to see the castles at Bellinzona.

A day trip to Lucerne would be pretty good. The scenery is nice on the way too.

(One thing to bear in mind is make sure that the trains you take actually allow you to see something. Some of the bullet trains actually prevent viewing. However, I don't *think* this is an issue from Lugano.)

Hi Dave,
……fantastic!!
I'm from Ticino (the italian part of Switzerland)…..good to see that somebody will visit Lugano.

I agree with Mark, Lucerne will be a good trip.(don't miss the transportation museum!)

Also consider to visit the St. Gotthard, if you're up for military stuff, bunkers and co to be find there.

If you are more keen for the Roman Era, than visit Augst, near Basel (Augusta Raurica in Latin) Old roman garrison Fort on the lime (the border with germania) in August there's a big rehenactment show…..very popular.
Also in the area there is Windonissa…now Windisch….ancient roman town with anfitheather.(they have a homepage type "augusta raurica" and you should find it).

Zürich, Basel, Bern all have military museums with nice collections af armours, especially late medioeval.

In Ticino itself…..yeah you have the Castelli di Bellinzona, the ruins of the castle in Mesocco…..no much more what's military.

In the french part of Switzerland there are also Roman settlements or towns and nice castles (Estavayer-le-Lac, Montreaux, etc)

Hope this helps you…….

Alex

Augst is nice.

Rather than Estavayer-le-lac, I would recommed Murten, which has magnificent city walls.

The Military Museum in Morges Castle (near Laussane) is great.

But I'm not convinced any of these is achievable while travelling by train and staying in Lugano. They are more than simple day trips.

Alex

Thanks for the input.

I hope to try to get to Mesocco, which is new to me.

Sorry for not responding earlier – TMP plus has rather messed up my method of reviewing topics I am interested in.

Mark

I have been to Morges – it is very good – even my wife enjoyed it!
