Does anyone have any experience with the new steam washer and dryers? The has managed to kill another electronic device (the washer is not getting the water spun out of the cloths) so we are looking at new washer and probably dryer. Looking around we see the ones with steam but aren't sure they are worth the extra money so I'm looking for input from the well rounded group of folks here at TMP. Thanks

Err that is "the wife has managed"

They are tied in with people being afraid of germs in some way from the reading I have done, they do not clean any better then a reg. washer and dryer, and they use a lot more power to make that steam. The only thing I can point you at is go with a front load washer better cleaning, lower water use and work well even if you over load them.

I read the thread to my wife and she said the same thing as quester above. My best recommednation would be to check out Consumer Reports for a better read on the issue.

We got an LG washer in November that was a floor sample at HH Gregg, normally retails at $1,400.00, and we got it under $900. USD Anyway, it is a frontload with a steam option. I like it as it really uses less water and spins the clothes fast enough that they are damp but not wet when they go to the dryer, which shortens dry time as well. While we can use a sanitize setting which uses steam for a regular wash load, I mostly use the Quick Steam (automatic 20 mins) setting to release wrinkles. I use it a lot and it works well. Pretty much cut my ironing to zero.

Oh, and Consumer Reports had it in the top five Front Load Washer catagory in its 2007 book.

Thanks guys. We are looking at the LG and I believe we are going tonight to get one (not sure on steam or not). We don't iron so that isn't an issue but the Quick Steam could be handy. The only question is due we replace the 4 year old dryer also. One reason to is we really like their cherry red color but the dryer is white.

Thanks for asking this, Martin. Saved me the trouble.

When you get a dryer, get one with a buzzer. Did you know they make them without? :)

YW Neotacha. I always tend to turn off the buzzer. At least on the old one as it was buzz not just when it was done but several times. I think it the clothes were done but it kept spinning them to help with the wrinkles. I just didn't always want to go get them and it quickly got on my nerves.

We ended up getting LP with steam. We got the steam on the washer as it was the only one with the 1320 RPM spin cycle. Had to get it on the dryer then to get the matching color (cherry red). Also ended up with the risers for them (a mere $400). The wife whined it was too far to bend over (and she is just 5'5"). At 6'6" I didn't think it was too bad to bend over to them but she did. Maybe it's her old age. :)

Though buying these has placed her new upstairs flooring purchase on hold for awhile.
