As of today, Elizabeth II will become the oldest monarch in Britain's history, surpassing Victoria, who was 81 years, 7 months and 29 days old when she died in 1901.

How much longer before Prince Charles becomes the oldest at coronation?

GoodBye20 Dec 2007 11:41 a.m. PST

Congrats to the Queen.

A question for our English brethren; what is the line of succession? Will Charles inherit the throne or will it pass to one of his sons bypassing him?

I'm a little curious.

Charles is next in line as long as he is alive (and hasn't done anything to officially disqualify himself). There have been rumors floating around the last couple of years that he might refuse the crown in which case his oldest son would become king. Personally, I think Charles will not refuse the crown even if mother lives to be 100 like his grandmother.

Congrats to the Queen. She still has another 8 years to beat Queen Victoria's length of reign record.

Hang in there, you can do it.

I suspect HRH will match her mum's age, which means old big ears might have quite a wait.

May she continue to reign, but it would be better if she RULED! God bless her.

It will soon be January 20th.

Shagnasty. An interesting idea. She certainly couldn't do any worse than our elected government!

The only way Charles could opt out of the line of sucession would be to abdicate. This should disqualify his offspring as well making Andrew next in line.

I feel we should either stick with the existing rules or go for a republic. Any faffing about turning it into a beauty contest would strip it of any of the remaining dignity. It might make an interesting reality TV show though.

Really?

Wow; so Charles must assume the throne to make his children eligable?

That's fascinating! So many twists and turns for sucession of the crown. I though it was fairly simple; seems to have almost as many caveats as our own system.

Thanks!
