I can't believe how many mistakes I made in that message
Let's try that again
Must remember to use spell check every time

Some few months ago I was sent a document from a friend of mine that is supposed to be a government sponsored study on the positive effects of Role-Playing on young people.

Unfortunately this document is in Swedish, and runs to 16 pages. The title is "Rollspel Som Fritidssysselsattning".

I was wondering if anyone would be willing to take a shot at translating this document for me, or could recommend a service that could do it for me. I can E-Mail a PDF version of the document if you are interested

This one? ( PDF link )

Translating all 16 pages is a bit much, and most of it is just describing RPGs for non-gamers, and statistics on who plays what and when. I'll see if can find the time to translate the conclusions (pages 12-13).

The investigation was indeed sponsored by the swedish government and published by Ungdomsstyrelsen (the Swedish National Board for Youth Affairs, link )

Here's a quick translation of the headings with my comments and summaries within parantheses:

Rollspel som fritidssysselsättning
RPGs as leisure time pursuits (Fritidssysselsättning means something like "spare time activity" or "leisure time pursuit")

Inledning
Introduction

Vad är rollspel
What are RPGs

Olika former av rollspel
Different kinds of RPGs (mentions that the term is also used in phycho-analysis, theatre and other areas)

Näraliggande spel
Related games (this deals with tabletop games, card games, wargames etc)

Rollspel som fritidssysselsättning
RPGs as leisure time pursuits (GMs and players, social backgrounds)

Olika sätt att spela rollspel
Different ways of playing RPGs (Pen and paper vs live action)

Olika rollspelsgenrer
Different genres of RPG (Fantasy, cyberpunk, horror)

Hur många och vilka spelar?
How many and who play (Statistics on age, gender, social background etc.)

Rollspel som organiserad fritid
RPGs as organised leisure time

Sveriges Roll- och Konfliktspelsförbund
The Swedish Association of Role Playing and Gaming (This deals with SVEROK, an association with approximately 70000 members ( sverok.se/english.html ))

Spelkonvent
Gaming cons (What are they, what do you do there?)

Rollspel på konfirmationsläger
RPGs at youths' confirmation camps (Don't know if that makes any sense – do those exist outside sweden?)

Avslutande diskussion
Concluding discussion (RPGs are relatively new, there is little research)

Rollspel som redskap i ungdomars identitetsarbete
RPGs as tools in the identity work of youths (RPGs can be useful in forming an identity, learning creativity, learning about historical, cultural and social states. Much of the criticism against RPGs is just expressions of so called moral panic)

Ett samband mellan rollspel och våld?
A connection between RPGs and violence? (Can RPGs make weak-minded individuals lose their grip on reality and perform acts of violence? Well, probably not. Let's translate a bit here:
"For the youths who play RPGs as leisure time pursuits it's obvious that the game's structures, rules, tables, the fall of the dice etc, together with the verbal concentration and the fact that the game deals with different imaginary worlds, create a distance between the player and the character being played. The fact that dice are being used as a help to create the different characters of the game makes the game largely unpredictable – which in turn limits the possibilities for the game master to manipulate the players.")

Det organiserade rollspelet
The organised RPG (Should SVEROK continue to receive money from the government? Yes.)

Fan-freaking-tastic

Thank you so much

From what I can gather this is something I would want to have a complete english translation of. I wont ask you to do that but at least now I am motivated to look harder for a source.
