Thanks! Cimarrones (runaway) communities in the Spanish territories of the early colonial period were often called palenques, regardless of the province. There were many in Hispaniola, Panama, Columbia and elsewhere. Very interesting. CC |

It's the Spanish version of what the Portuguese would call Quilombos. The Brazilian versions could be very resilient. The Portuguese sent 4 expeditions against the quilombo at Palmeiras in the 17th C. |
