Reminds me of part of a Woody Allen (I think) essay about the English language from years ago, where "fish" could be spelled "ghosi"--gh pronounced as in tough; o as in women; si as in tension.

@mjkerner – I learned that in 3rd grade english (about 1965)

fish = ghoeti

Thanks for the (re)memory.

I'm hoping Aaron will come out with another really good show. Seems like the current crop just can't cut it.

On the subject of spelling, a local radio station had a contest today. To win you had to call in and spell out the word "technology." They went through about a dozen people before someone finally spelled it right.

Spelling does change over the years. Trying to read stuff from the 1600's makes my head hurt.

Ghoeti = fish.
Are you sure it's English you're learning on that side of the pond?

I dunno about the future of spelling but the future of punctuation looks bleak.

Yesterday, the wife brought home a leaflet from the Language and Speech Therapy Department in our area about encouraging your 2-3 year old to speak. I was surprised to read "yes, your brushing your doll's hair". Then shocked to see the mistake repeated three more times. "your running on the grass" etc.

The good news was that, according to the leaflet, our 22 month old son already speaks like a 3 year old.

If that is what English is going to become I would rather take up French!!

I always want to put the apostrophe into Morrisons. When I win the lottery there will be a midnight raid.
