This week I completed and sent off, a commission for one of the members of the TMP supporting members Parlor. link link All honour is due to his father and comrades in arms, for their successful role in the battle depicted. Yes, the colour splashes are correct. The Japanese were firing shells with coloured dye, so they could tell which ships splashes were which. Oh and as scary as it looks, the litte American DE did get into a gun duel with the large Japanese Tone class cruiser depicted. Considerable research went into the colours of the ship, USS Raymond. The heavy weathering around her bow appears in photographs taken at the time. This sort of thing happened a lot during the pressure of wartime urgency, when ships didnt have time to retouch the paint work. |

The action off Samar ranks with the attack of the Torpedo Squadrons at Midway as perhaps the most courageous unit actions of the US Navy. Thank God we have such men in our armed services. |

Yes, the more I researched it, the more improbable it all seemed to be. Especially that after the battle, the destroyer escort shown, had no physical damage, or casualties, but it required a couple of days for them to clean the coloured dye off it!!!! Quite amazing. |

What is it about destroyers that seems to bring out unbelievable upsets? The USN off Samar, the RN at Barents Sea, the IJN at Tassafaronga
all were hopelessly outnumbered and outclassed, and all somehow snatched victory from way, way back in the jaws of defeat. |

Very true Cke1st. Yet most rules treat Destroyers as very expendible vessels of little consequence other than being a nuicanse with their torpedoes. |

Hmmm, to paraphrase, "There seems to be something wrong with our rules
" <grin> |

Yep. I'd agree with that 'All Over the Skye'. But its a fault with many wargames rules of all kinds. Perhaps we get too used to them being 'models' and forget how deadly some war machines can be. |
