I know it is nerdy, but while looking for army buddies I stumbled on this photo on Wikipedia:

I KNOW THESE GUYS!!!!

My unit, 313th Signal company was deployed to Roving Sands in '95. The tropo team is from 2nd platoon, and their camo netting is wrong (the stuff draped over the antenna should be held out by poles and the big gaps should not be there.) Note the white engineer tape in front of the antenna to mark the radiation hazard area. I think the guy sitting down is SGT Roberson and they're playing dominoes.

Ahh memories… My team was up at Stallion AF on the north end of the range. And I had scrounged proper desert camo netting from the back of the CONEX.

Very cool.

I caused a similar moment with a co-worker. I had brought "Blind Man's Bluff" into the office one day and KVK asked what it was about. He was shocked to see that all the submarine snooping exploits had been declassified as he'd been involved in some of that. He was even more surprised to see the photo of some of the people involved – he was best man at one guy's wedding.

Wow! A TRC-170(V3)! I used to deploy with the (V1) and Horn equipped TRC's. Definitely brings back old memories…

I had one of those moments yesterday. On CNN the interviewed the Head of Drug Enforcement in Florida, he was the Task Force commander I was attached to in '86.

Babbaski, I am stunned that there is another tropo guy here. I spent may nights with my back against the klystron watching meter for the BER short, hollering at my team members to pan and elevate the antennas. Tropo light, fit to fight!

Just FYI- I read on the web that they are doing an across the board modem upgrade on all of the Army and Air Force terminals to increase the bandwidth. Looks like the plan is to keep them in the inventory until 2020, not bad for '70's technology. They provide good, stable long haul links and the satellite systems cannot keep up with demand.
