Woke up at 0430 this a.m. to the sounds of what apparently was my patio glass tabletop "exploding." Looks just like this link I'm not sure of the exact manufacturer of the table, but I bought it at Sears over a year ago. Wierd. |

Just curious, was there a large change in tempature last night in your area? Just the other day I heard glass break in my daughters room, thought one of the cats had knocked over a glass but didn't see anything. A little closer look showed that one of the lightbulbs in her cealing fan had shattered. The weird part was that neither the lights or the fan were on. when the switch for the lights was turned on the broken bulb still worked for a few seconds before burning out. No idea what caused the bulb to break. |

This same exact thing happened to a friend of mine. Her table just exploded, unfortunately it happened to her when there was already food all over it. It made quite a mess. Apparently this particular make of table does it frequently. |

It's poorly tempered glass. Fairly common occurance. A plate glass shop shoudl be able to make a new top with either 1/4 plexi, or measure & order another tempered piece. |

Sears and K-Mart are the same company, so its likely that even if it didn't have the "Martha Stewart" name on it, it was the same table. Given that it appears to be a common defect of this model, I'd make them buy it back. Even if you don't have the receipt, they have your purchase in their computers. Wyatt |

All: Thanks for your info – guess I'm not the only one – never heard of it before. Grinch: I'm in Puyallup, WA (just east of Tacoma) & it was very hot (for here) yesterday/last night/this a.m. – it hit about 90 degrees; clearly not as hot as it gets in other places though – that you'd expect to have lawn/outdoor furniture. I'll see what Sears says – I did file the online Consumer Complaint report. If I hit a wall, I'll see how much a plexiglass one will cost. Regards, Dean |

My sister had the back window on her car expolde like that once. It was a cold night and she turned the rear window defroster on to clear up the fog on the window, and BANG. They had screwed up the temper on the glass window, and the tempeture difference blew it to bits. The dealer ship told her it was rare to have happen, but not unheard of. |

I understand Puyallup has grown significantly in the last 10 years. Anyway, I've never head of exploding glass tables, but that's scary. |

Dean, I don't recall exactly when, but within the past 5-7 years, there was some kind of significant news story on glass patio tables that broke/exploded. And now for a related ethnic joke: What's Irish and sits out in the rain? Patty O'Furniture |
