Everyone in my family seems to end up in the Army, maybe cuz were Landlubbers and will barf in a row boat on a calm lake. What does the Navy do to new recruits who are sea sick? Do they just let them barf their guts out, or do they give them something? Anyone serve in the Navy here? |

I was a Marine, Dramamine was easy to get, but I never needed it, stil, I suppose it works for most. |

I thought you were not allowed to take anything. |

Dramamine sometimes; doesn't always work. I remember going through a super-typhoon transiting by Adaka; 100 ft waves, and our CV (MarDet USS RANGER CV-61) was rocking and rolling like a carnival ride. Waves were so big that you could look down the passagway that ran beneath the flight deck, fore and aft, and see the frames twisting in opposite directions. Anyway, for about 3 days, trips to the messdeck invariabley meant dealing with 2-3 people yacking up their meals. Their faces would literally turn green, and then "Thar She Blows!". Some poor mess crank would get stuck trying to swab up the mess, with his bucket pitching fore and aft, port and starboard. Good thing was that the chow line never ran out of food during that time. Ah, good times, good times :-) |

We had the little pills and patches. Not worth much in my opinion, I figured they were placeboes for the new guys. Basically, you just had to get used to it. And you do, at least the day-to-day motion. Now, a major storm will hose over a lot of guys who would normally be okay, but that's part of the job. |

We typically gave out the patches and dramamine pills, though I don't think they worked very well. Sailors would try to stay as stationary as possible, and keep a garbage bag with them to contain the mess. It isn't very pretty, especially when you mix in the smell of paint, diesel fuel and amine. |

You have to take that stuff half an hour before the "motion" or it doesnt work, and the stuff makes you sleepy, so that's why I wanted to know. Drugged up sailor or barfin' machine? |
