The wife keeps lusting over a Dyson vacuum, so I'm thinking of getting her one for Mother's Day. Question is, Are They Really That Good? |
| Nick Nascati | 07 May 2007 10:49 a.m. PST |
Yes, they are! I actually offer to vacuum now. |
| Stoelzels Structures | 07 May 2007 10:51 a.m. PST |
I wouldn't notice the difference, but my wife couldn't be happier with it. |

Best vacuum we have ever had (in 20 years of married life) |
| Jacko27 | 07 May 2007 11:02 a.m. PST |
Well I beg to differ They may not loose suction but the drive belt keeps coming off and its much easier to change a bag than to unscrew the thing to put the belt back on. Most overrated domestic appliance ever in my book |
| Veteran Cosmic Rocker | 07 May 2007 11:04 a.m. PST |
Yep, worth the money – you are able to see the drum filling up and it doesn't lose suction. Also very powerful. We had the upright version a few years back but found this to be too heavy and now have the type with a base unit and long stalk (much easier to use). |
| Goldwyrm | 07 May 2007 11:06 a.m. PST |
Yes they're good. We used our old vacuum with a fresh bag then went over the same spot with the Dyson and it picked up a whole lot more. If I was willing to spend that much on a vacuum you have to know that it doesn't suck. (well, it does, just not in that way). |

Well as much as I can like a vacuum I do like Dyson's |

We bought a Shark Infinity upright from Canadian Tire for $200 USD that also uses cyclone bagless technology and doesn't lose suction. It works great so far for about 1/3 of the price of a Dyson. Dave in Edmonton |

My wife would kill me if I bought that for her for Mother's Day. That said, we haven't ventured into the Dyson ones yet as we hhave heard they weren't as good as the Oreck ones. So we have an Oreck and it works real well. Nick – tell the truth, you just want to make sure your wife doesn't suck up any soldiers! |
| Psycho Rabbit | 07 May 2007 11:21 a.m. PST |
Though not familiar with Dyson in particular it is listed towards the bottom, as all bag-less vacuums are, for emitting airborne contagions. I went with a Oreck, it offers more suction and cleaner. Rabbit |

My wife would kill me if I bought that for her for Mother's Day. She bought me a Chain Saw for one of our Wedding Anniversary's, we aree practical like that! |
| pphalen | 07 May 2007 11:32 a.m. PST |
We have a bagless Bissel now that I cam FOREVER cleaning/changing the filters to get it to suck. The Orecks always looked cool, but I don't need to pick up Bowling Balls, just some dirt

Rule #17 of Married Life (TM): Never buy your wife a present (anniversary, birthday, Mother's Day) that plugs in or runs on gasoline (unless it is a car). The reverse is not, however, true. |

Worse vacuum cleaner we ever bought. The motor and suction are fine but the accessories are plastic crap what break easily, and will need to be replaced. The cord auto-rewind stopped working after about 6 months, the hose broke at the joint 3 times – and although replaced under warranty it was still a pain. And the stupid tool holder that attaches to the hose bangs against the furniture, dog, door jamb etc and all the tools fall off. Useless I'd never waste my money on one again!!! Sterling |
| Sterling Moose | 07 May 2007 12:13 p.m. PST |
Oh, I forgot the telescopic pipe that goes between the hose and the tool. Well after a while it wont stay extended and keeps closing, and the plastic, spring loaded button falls off too (and in our case had to be secured with sticky tape. |

thing with Oreck – they require you to visit and have the machine serviced (free) 2 x a year. worth it. they always clean some crap out of it and they get it back to 100% when serviced. |
| Major Kong | 07 May 2007 12:27 p.m. PST |
'Course, most vacuums do. |
| chronoglide | 07 May 2007 1:18 p.m. PST |
While you're at it, why not buy one of Dyson's contra-rotating washing machiines
? Despite the name they've got nothing to do with spinning Nicaraguan insurgents around

I am a Dyson fan. I got the anti-allergy version. |
| smok00 | 07 May 2007 1:35 p.m. PST |
I want a Roomba vacuum – but they are FAR too much at the moment. |
| Gattamalata | 07 May 2007 2:51 p.m. PST |
If a vacuum cleaner costs more than a new computer or a used car, you might want to reconsider making the purchase – it's not as if you're needing a laboratory environment. When my Hoover broke down, I went with a Kenmore, somethings I don't like about it compared with the Hoover, but it gets the job done. I hear bagless vacs are messy to clean

I tried a Dyson "Ball" and a Dyson "Slim" for about a week each, and while I generally liked them, they were somewhat awkward (the hose extension especially, as opposed to the Kenmore canister we have that you just use your foot to pop it the wand off the powerbrush) and they made a horribly loud shrieking noise that my wife couldn't stand. So we went back to a Kenmore canister. |

We have the 'animal' version that does a pretty good job on two long-haired cats' worth of shed hair. And it's fun to play 'space rangers' with the telescopic tube. |

It's not a Dyson, but I like our Roomba. It's nice to have something vacuum for me. I just plop it down in the hobby room and it goes to work while I paint. |
| streetline | 07 May 2007 4:58 p.m. PST |
I used to work for Oreck's UK agent.. they're good basic machines but horribly over priced in the UK at least. We've got a Dyson which heavier, but better

Got to agree with Jizbrand. Don't by the appliance for your wife. Buy it for 'the house', at a later date. Get something nice for your wife like jewelry or theatre tickets. |
| Bardolph | 07 May 2007 7:46 p.m. PST |
Another vote for the Roomba. Only thing I've had to do to it so far is use some canned air on the sensors when it started going in circles. Other than that it works like a champ, while I sit here and surf lol. I will say we have hardwood floors, not sure how it does on carpet. On the other hand we have more critters in the house than most people and if all that cat hair hasn't killed it yet I don't know what will. |
| pphalen | 08 May 2007 6:37 a.m. PST |
Until a Roomba can clean stairs, I'll have to try something else

jizbrand: Rule #17 of Married Life (TM): Never buy your wife a present (anniversary, birthday, Mother's Day) that plugs in or runs on gasoline (unless it is a car). The reverse is not, however, true. My wife got that schpiel from her co-workers just before we got married. "You have to nip that in the bud!" they told her. That Christmas, every one of her packages had an electrical cord protruding from the box. Even the books. |

I have to agree with Lon, never by household items for gifts! Don't worry Lon, no one vacuums in my game room but me. |
| Bardolph | 08 May 2007 9:11 a.m. PST |
Lol pphalen, it can clean stairs
one at a time. We like ours so much we are probably going to buy a second one for upstairs and perhaps the floor washing one as well ;) |
