WAR ELEPHANT:
War Elephant

Genre Fantasy
Race Riders are Men
General Description Armored elephant with riding platform, three riders.
Clothing/Armor Chainmail visible on front body, down to knee height; also wears a cap of mail (ears bare). Scales of armor plate protect upper trunk. Back two-thirds of animal covered with cloth (over chainmail?).
Equipment The howdah or riding platform runs the length of the beast, and is square in outline. Drapes connect the howdah to the animal. The howdah walls are built of irregular rectangular pieces, some with a subtle grain pattern (wood? perhaps gilded wood?).
Details This is a heavy piece. Consider placing on an extra-wide base, especially due to delicate riders.
Components Basic elephant consists of one piece, plus howdah side panels (2) for a total of 3 pieces, not counting riders. Test the howdah sides before attaching, to see which fits best on each side. Curved end faces forward. Will require filling and patience to eliminate gaps where howdah parts meet.
Imperfections Knob of flash on end of trunk should be carefully filed. Seam slightly visible at throat, hard to file due to texture in area. Seam visible on trunk, howdah back. Small area of heavy flash on inside left rear leg, not visible to normal viewer. Our sample had small piece broken off right rear howdah. Unlike rest of howdah, inside front is smooth and featureless.
Description Rider/driver, molded into basic elephant figure.
Clothing/Armor Asian-style robes with full-length flowing sleeves, skirt to ankles. Pointed shoes. Hat with plume (plume fills gap between figure and front of howdah).
Details Rider has haughty, regal quality. Not sure what his outstretched left hand is doing.
Imperfections In our sample figure, a small area near the rider's left foot failed to mold properly; luckily, error easily blends into elephant's ear, not noticeable when painted.
Description Archer riding elephant.
Clothing/Armor Sleeveless, knee-length quilted robe tied with sash. Pants under robe, shoes. Shirt sleeves puff above elbow, tight below. Conical helmet.
Weapons Bow in left hand.
Details Archer has moustache and "goatee" beard, shoulder-length hair. Where the sash ties, could be painted as (a) two hanging sash ends, (b) small scabbard under sash, or (c) empty sack under sash.
Construction Peg on bottom of left foot fits into holes in howdah. Figure seems to fit best with pegged foot in third hole from front; other foot (supposed to have peg?) over unused fourth hole.
Imperfections Thick sprue ends may need to be filed at bottom of bow, ends of both feet, and top of right hand (easily done).
Description Spearman riding elephant.
Clothing/Armor Breast- and backplate. Quilted elbow-length sleeves. Overlapping "lobster" armor over crotch, front and back (metal or leather). Loose, knee-length pants tucking into knee-high boots. Elbow-length gauntlets. Helmet with "bent" top.
Weapons Spear in right hand. Long, triangular head.
Details Shoulder-length hair.
Construction Stiff wire is provided for use as spear shaft; a pewter spear point is also provided (don't mistake it for sprue and toss it out!). Insert wire through open right hand. Do not necessarily force wire into left hand -- it could be held out for balance, rather than holding spear. Our sample speartip had very thin sprue at base, which we left on for strength when attaching to wire shaft.

Figure seems to fit best at front of howdah, with (either) pegged foot in one of the holes provided. With our sample, both feet did not fit both holes at same time, and figure made alarming creaking noises when we tried to move feet closer together -- we filed one foot-peg off, and posed it near the unused hole.

Imperfections Seam slightly visible on left hip and gauntlet, left helmet. May need to file sprue connection at left hand (easily done).
Options Can of course substitute other riders, by removing bases and inserting custom figures. With two sets, could make one elephant with two spearmen, and one elephant with two archers.

Note: The package claims this figure has 6 pieces. I count seven. Either Ral Partha doesn't consider the wire to be a "piece," or maybe I'm wrong about that spearpoint (maybe it is sprue).
