What size (I sway away from saying 'scale') or figures does one use with 1/87th vehicles. Would they be 18mm or so? Anybody know and if anyone makes figures to suit? These look nice vehicles, BTW John T |

Yes they look nice but I would imagine the problem is they are not a standard scale ? FOW is 15mm Some rules sets use 20mm (Rapid fire) skirmish rules tend to 28mm No one really uses 1/87th?? |

"Yes they look nice but I would imagine the problem is they are not a standard scale ?" Perhaps not for wargaming but I think the model railway crowd may disagree with you. Back in the day I remember seeing Roco Minitanks 1:87 vehicles being used quite happily alongside Airfix HO/OO figs. Nowadays large 15mm or small 20mm seems to be the way to go! See below; TMP link |

I use 1:87 scale vehicles and 1/72nd scale plastic figures, and have since about 1963. It seems to be working out okay. Randy of Fidelis and I are friends and our collections of models are vast. There are many companies that make 1/87th scale figures, but most are civilians. Prieser makes a significant range of WWII figures, mostly German, US, and Russian. Many people use 15mm or 18mm figures with HO vehicles. There are probably more vehicles in HO scale than any other except perhaps microarmor. Lots of both military and civilian vehicles. I always have photos of them on my blog. Mike "Bunkermeister" Creek bunkermeister.blogspot.com |

I also have a verrrrry large collection of 1/87 scale models, mostly Roco, and also use 1/76 scale (with certain models) alongside Airfix soldiers. Yes, much might not be to "scale," but if one can accept 1" = 50meters/yards, then I suppose scale can't really be an issue. FOW vehicles are in some instances the same scale or size as some 1/87 scale models from various sources. For instance: FOW KV I, KVII, KV-85 are all the same size as my KOMO Minitank KV's. So
I use some FOW vehicles in my collection. One thing I will say about 1/72, 1/76 or 1/87 scale figures (for the most part) is that they don't resemble dwarves or look like little misshapen children. The thing about 15mm is that that is what they look like to me. When you measure the head of the figure and look at the thickness of the weapons, bayonets, etc., they look 'odd' to me. I'm not really knocking 15mm and other smaller scales, because I understand the casting process and making durable figures out of metal is a problem. However, I will say that supply and demand in the market of wargaming has always been a mixed bag, and we as wargamers all have our problems trying to obtain products that fit our game. FOW does a nice job of trying to provide as many models as possible and keep them all in scale to each other. Some of us old-timey folks just have too big a collection to just toss and start over. Believe me, if I could have it all in one scale I would, but the $$$$$ is prohibits me, not to mention the fact that I don't have the time to repaint that many forces. :-) |

How large is very large? Your collection sounds like mine. Too big to start over. I could not even begin to unpack everything, much less assemble and paint everything. Mike "Bunkermeister" Creek bunkermeister.blogspot.com |

Being that it's not lady-like to brag, I won't – but I have a big collection and they are all assembled and most every one of them is either primered and/or painted. Alongside the Roco and Komo I have a big number of kit-built vehicles, namely Matchbox/Revel, Fujimi and Airfix (1/76 scale) to help outfit my units. I'm not sure, but I think I've constructed over 100 sdkfz 251 halftracks – I could probably build one in my sleep. |
