These look like they could be fun.

How many figures are in the units?

See bit.ly/1xZUQFv for AAR reports photos etc.

They should give you a good idea. Basically it varies but it's never a lot.

Thanks Martin.

It looks even more attractive now………… :)

Martin,

Another question for you. How do the army lists work? I can see that each has a small number of "compulsory" units and then a list to choose from but how is that choice decided?

I presume that the "2D3" etc. is 2 rolls of a D3 to see how many elements you get.

I'm trying to get a rough idea of the number of figures I need to make an army.

Thanks,

Dave

It's on page 9 of the rules. ;-)

Yes. In essence you have 10 companies: 5 compulsory & 5 optional. For the options you select the first option, roll the dice, add as many as you want / dice allow, move on.

I'm trying to get a rough idea of the number of figures I need to make an army.

This is hard without the rules and because of the flexibility written into the lists.

To start. I'd calculate the compulsories then add the numbers for your favoured options. Then you can get figures for the other options.

I bought the first edition set and our group enjoys this rules set, gives a fun game.
As for exact number of figures, it's really not that important. I mean pike might say 6 figs and light horse 2 but since there aren't casualties by figures (its the stand that counts) you can certainly fudge that without affecting the rules.
Example: If you had a stand of 4 pikemen, it would not be an issue to playing the game. This set is very flexible.

In fact while the 1st edition states that it is necessary to use square bases, my figures were already mounted on rectangular bases and we've played several games like that and have not really noticed any problems.

Martin,

Not got the rules yet, waiting for the 2nd edition on 01/12/2014.

Is that 10 companies maximum? Or could your options take your force over the 10?

Thanks Martin and mghFond,

Dave

Hi Dave/Tarleton,

Each player always has whatever compulsory companies are listed – depending on the army, there are between 3 and 5 compulsory companies.

In a standard game, each player would select five 'options'. For each option, you'd roll whichever dice type is designated to recruit that many companies. i.e., if it says 1 field artillery, you only get one, but if it says 1d6 tribal archers, you'd roll a 1d6 and be able to recruit between one and six companies (whatever the dice says).

The size of your army will vary wildly depending on which options you choose and how the dice treat you.

My Hollanders average about 10 companies per game while my Caribbean Indians usually have about 14 or so.

Thanks Harry, that makes things a lot clearer.

With one week to go:

[1] PayPal requests have been sent to everyone who indicated they were definitely interested in the pdf version as part of our October survey.

[2] An email update has been sent to everyone who asked for more information nearer the launch date.

Thanks for everyone's support.

I know I'm maybe pre-empting things a bit but whats the North African/Berber list like? I'm thinking of an opponent for the Songhai.

HarryHotspurEsq25 Nov 2014 3:41 a.m. PST

Compulsory Berber warriors and Berber shot, and then lots of different options – Berber horse, Camelry, more warriors/shot/archers, spearmen, Arab mercenary warriors, Renegados, Moriscos, Janissary shot/archers, scouts and artillery.

Tarleton25 Nov 2014 8:46 a.m. PST

Thanks again Harry.

Are there any WRG, Ian Heath, George Gush type books covering the Berbers? I know next to nothing of the Moroccans of this period except they use to raid Cornish villages for slaves!
