Nice review. I ordered one of these last night. If they do switch to this format for all the army books I'll most likely collect them. I've only upgraded army books sporadically since 4th edition. |

Wow. Up to 8th, now? I've been out of the loop, bigtime. |

Meanwhile I've noticed an upsurge of interest in 3rd edition. |

3rd edition rocks. I think the greying of the hobby is the thing most TMPers aren't getting any younger. GW of old had a big impact on my early wargaming life. In later life I just want to go back to the WFB and 40K I enjoyed in my youth the new stuff just doesn't have the same appeal. |
Space Monkey | 21 Feb 2011 3:08 p.m. PST |
I don't think it's purely nostalgia though
we've bought 2nd and 3rd to have a go at it and none of us ever played WFB before
Fantasy Rules! is the only big battle fantasy wargame I've played much of. |

Nice looking book cover, certainly! |

buying endless new army books for my many warhammer and 40K armies is a chore, I'd be happy with a 20 page no frills PDF, I wish that was an option. |
Space Monkey | 21 Feb 2011 3:35 p.m. PST |
Or just one over-arching armies book that covered them all in one go
Not that there's as much money to be had in that. |

I'd be happy with a 20 page no frills PDF, I wish that was an option. Not going to do a lot for GWs profits though

Id like a no frills book too. I dont need all the pictures in color. I dont need 14 pages of pictures of the same models Ive seen 100 times before. I dont need 20 pages of fluff. Only 8 magic items in total for the army 3 of which can only be taken by a lord choice? What a great way to cut down on the variety. Chuck |

I flipped through the display copy at our local hobby store yesterday, and it is a handsome book. And, unlike the soft-bound ones, you can open this one up to a page and have it stay open. |

I'm good with the no frills as well. I've seen enough pictures of the figures, I've seen 3-4 iterations of fluff, now I just want the army list and special rules. Actually, more expensive books are going to make me less likely to upgrade my army book collection. The $40 USD break point does indeed break the bank, at least as far as perceived value goes. I used to keep up, but not at that price. So I'm a curmudgeon, but I have 8 WHFB armies, I know what the figures and fluff look like, and at $40 USD a pop to stay current, I'm thinking I'll let a few slide whereas I used to pick up the new books. |

For $37.25, I'd expect something that won't be invalidated in less than 5 years. I thought the army books with a price tag of $29.00 USD was ridiculous, considering they were $20 USD a few years ago – is the price of paper tied to oil and pewter? |
Privateer4hire | 21 Feb 2011 6:03 p.m. PST |
Maybe they had to raise the price to offset the Mantic models being used to fill out WHFB armies? Also, here's the direct link to the blog review link |

Looks like a nice tome, but I'm with the last few lot
spent enough upgrading the books every 4-8 years (been doing it since 4th Edition). I'll be letting this one pass (but may still grab that nasty Giant Spider thingy!) |

I've had a flick through and it is a nice book- was surprised by the magic items section being so short. Thankfully 8th Edition has huge numbers of 'common' magic items in the rulebook- maybe this will become the norm in order to make things fairer in tournaments, but I don't know. Also, I remember that back in third edition, most of the magic items were common back then too, with only a handful of race-specific ones. Leigh |

"Wow. Up to 8th, now? I've been out of the loop, bigtime." Yeah, The Beast Rabban. I will never play this game. I cannot paint fast enough to keep up with the rules churning. |
Bob Runnicles | 22 Feb 2011 8:26 a.m. PST |
So you're saying it takes you 5-6 YEARS to paint an army? |
Gattamalata | 22 Feb 2011 8:51 a.m. PST |
Don't know about KONKURUR, but 5-6 years is how long it takes for me to be content with a paintjob, after having stripped and re-painted 30+ figure units twice. Then there are the OOP GW figures that I've been searching at reasonable prices: 1980s Citadel slotta based ninjas and anything from the Dogs of War range. If I wanted to game quickly, I'd pick up anything from the recent ranges, but most are overpriced subpar plastics, since GW switched to CAD, lacking some of the details of the Perry plastics from 10+ years ago. |
Space Monkey | 22 Feb 2011 1:30 p.m. PST |
since GW switched to CAD Ahhhh
that might explain the stink I smell coming off of some of the newer sculpts
like those minotaurs and the giant Skaven monstrosity. |

The book does look cool but the cost is too much for my non-Orc army pocketbook. Throughought most of 4th Ed., and all of 5th & 6th Editions I bought every army book. The collectaholic in me was happy and it was always handy to have them all as every WHFB army was played by somebody in my gaming group. That little hobby went away once the prices went above $20 USD each. At $40 USD for a hardcover
I can't even play all the armies that I own myself enough to warrant spending that. |
