I'm really looking forward to opening my box of legionaries soon!
Any news on the release date for the Allied Legion?

Cheers

STEVE LBMS20 Aug 2014 8:06 a.m. PST

I was supposed to have received some frames of the Allied legions this morning. I ran to the door when the posty knocked and opened my package only to find I had been sent a box of the Roman set 1 by mistake! I am due to get the Italian allied legion sprues tomorrow and once I have checked them over and all is ok they go into production.

Regards,

Steve.

Oh dear..I know this feeling, fairly annoying.
But at least you did get something. The only parcel I received today was some craft stuff the Missus had ordered from Japan. It had the right dimensions for a Victrix box so I was excited..but only briefly as all the writing was in funny letters..

Of course you are always welcome to send all your unwanted sprues to me, I promise to give them a good home!!!

;-)

Cheers

Patrick posted your order yesterday so it should get to you soon.

Yes, where were these, three decades ago, during my "Punic Period"? evil grin

Are there pics of the sprues anywhere? I had a fiddly time with the Victrix French Nap infantry and want to see how this project looks. Love the models! Thanks!

Paul7220 Aug 2014 10:42 a.m. PST

For those that have gotten a look at these, do the pila/spears feel sturdy? I love Victrix products and have gotten quite a few boxes over the years but I have had some terrible luck with spears snapping easily on the hoplites.

Well I sold off all my Punic 28 mm stuff a long while back(still have my 15mm) but the advent of these wonderful plastics and the accompanying allied troops plus all the Carthaginian forthcoming releases will be a strong incentive to return to this period in this size.

Sprue shots can be found on the shopping cart of the website.

Spears and Pilums are nice and robust. I have stuck 148 of them together so far without a breakage. Customers will start getting orders turning up tomorrow so I am sure they can attest to the fact the weapons are strong when they get them. The plastic is more flexible.

Part count to make a figure is nice and low. 4 parts to make a legionary in general. The Velites have more part options to give them more versatility.

Steve.

Suetonius Paullinus20 Aug 2014 12:32 p.m. PST

Personally I'd prefer more parts like with your first releases but I do remember all this It's Too Fiddly whinging so I think you are going the right way here.
3 parts plastics on the other hand are pretty basic and very same-y, taking away the core advantage (apart from being cheaper), their diversity.

Have you decided between Spanish or Gauls after the Carthaginians yet?

Cheers

The models look lovely and the few parts is a must. I have been far less interested in plastics, however, than I thought that I would have been years ago when this trend started. I just hate the risk of breakage and I do worry about the join between the helmet and the feather-plumes. Still, I might give these a go.

I agree with sausagesca; I will definitely give these a try!

Having 5 Roman armies in 10mm and two in 28mm I welcome the chance to add a third 28mm army to the mix.

Shame that the rest of us lose out because of the lack of fine motor skills of some, but I suppose that's the way of things- Lowest Common Denominator and all that.

Lovely figures, if a bit limited, all the same.

Would dearly like to see some matching cavalry at some stage. An airportable Ancient army that is not greek would be a fine thing. None the less I shall be chasing some of these when the allies are out.

The whole Victrix ancients range is astonishingly good, and these last releases are just awesome. I may seem a fanboy, and as I still don't have any of Victrix ancient references, I have to say I am going to solve that lack. Immediately. Allied legions… Now tell me Spanish are next after Carthaginians and make me even more happy. Please.

Darn..the postie had only bills for me today..still no figures…curse the Royal Mail!!

My motor skills are fine, thank you very much, I just don't have the TIME to assemble figures with separate legs/torsos/heads/arms etc etc. For rank and file figures a lower number of parts is fine, and these are still more poseable than a set number of poses in metal. Knowing that these are less fiddly than the Napoleonics makes me far more likely to pick up a box or three :)

STEVE LBMS21 Aug 2014 1:31 p.m. PST

I received the Italian allied legions boxes today and have to say I am extremely pleased with them. They really are great figures, full of detail and versatility.
I have stuck 40 of so together and will get some photos online tomorrow as long as the sun is shining for photography. I should be able to show off a few easy conversions I have done using Velites with Italian helmets as un-armoured Oscan types and some Campanian Hoplites made from these and Greek parts.
They have been added to the shopping cart.

As well as updating the 3 box deal I have added a 4 box consular army deal which are post free worldwide.

Sorry to hear your figures have not turned up yet SP, I was hoping they would get to you to hear your feedback.

Suetonius Paullinus22 Aug 2014 2:46 a.m. PST

Dang..maybe -hopefully- Saturday then..I won't be home all day though, typical.
Still, I'm gonna paint one as soon as I get the opportunity regardless!

If anyone knows at this point, how do these compare, siz-wise, with the Agema plastic Romans?

Bob Runnicles22 Aug 2014 8:20 a.m. PST

How do these sprues compare to the Hoplites? Are they fairly similar (in terms of number of pieces required to assemble etc)?

STEVE LBMS22 Aug 2014 9:20 a.m. PST

Just posted up some photo montages on the homepage and shopping cart of the new Italian figures.

Really pleased with how these have come out.

Bob, If you look at the products on shopping cart on the website we have sprue shot images of the figures so you can see how simple or difficult to stick together they are. I have pasted a link

I haven't even received my first lot and I am already tempted to order again lol!
Those look really nice, well done Steve. I hope this range will be hugely successful.

After all, we might see an Elephant then. And some plastic WW1!!

Ah – I was actually talking about the Greeks, not the Romans. However I took another look at the only one from the first four or five sets that I *didn't* look at already (the Athenians), and that's the one that has a sprue pic lol. Thanks Steve!

Grunt186122 Aug 2014 10:13 p.m. PST

My word my brush wants a crack at these!

Best looking unpainted miniatures I think I've seen.

Suetonius Paullinus23 Aug 2014 2:30 a.m. PST

Argh..still nothing in the post. The waiting game continues.
And we've a Bank Holiday. Life can be hard..

My father used to say, "if this is the worst thing that happens to you in life, be grateful." On the plus side something to anticipate and look forward to. grin

Suetonius Paullinus23 Aug 2014 11:06 a.m. PST

Quite right.
Shame my holidays will be over by the time I will get them.
But no doubt the figures are worth waiting for..
Leaves me some more time to ponder over my paint scheme..

I've just arrived home after spending most of the day on the M25, completely knackered and in the complete darkness of rural Suffolk I nearly missed the parcel in front of our kitchen door. Some god-like courier has done it! They have arrived!! The Bank Holiday weekend is saved!!!
And by Jupiter they are nice! Very crisp mail, better than expected. Full marks so far.
I'm gonna make myself a coffee and start painting..who needs sleep.

CARPE NOCTUM!

Hi SP,

I am so pleased they turned up in time for the bank holiday for you. The figures you have painted on Steve Dean look great. It is nice to finally see some paint on the figures. I have stuck together nearly 200 by now but still not had chance to put any paint on them due to LBMS orders to sort out. Julian is painting some over in France on holiday so I look forward to seeing his efforts.

I think the mail has come out very well. One of the things we pushed for was sharp crisp mail that was easy to paint for the customers. If you go down too fine with plastic it becomes shallow and indistinct and does not take dry brushing or washes very well.

Looking forward to seeing some more of your brush work.

Steve.

Suetonius Paullinus24 Aug 2014 11:48 a.m. PST

If I wasn't a fanboy before I am most definitely one now, those Romans are ace and I'm really pleased how easily they paint up:

My next order is made, 3 boxes more an then it will be time for those pesky Carthaginians ;-)

Cheers
