I think the first premise of this article is not correct.
"The Friendly Local Game Store (FLGS) is the cornerstone of any group"

I have been associated with a half dozen groups over my 50 years in organized wargaming and none were affiliated with a FLGS. Indeed, most of the locales did not even have such a place. I believe the cornerstone of any group is a critical core of like minded gamers who get along and are happy to share in playing various games as others want. Now, such a group can be facilitated by one member who has space for games, or they can get together as some public location. Not necessarily a store.

I wonder how many TMPers play at a FLGS. Has there been a poll covering where people play?

Living in NJ, I've been fortunate to know of at least two shops which supported games of most any type – one in northern NJ (Maplewood Hobby), and one in southern NJ (All the King's Men). There may be others – my point being that, aside from these two examples, most of the clubs I know of meet at other venues than an FLGS – rented halls, church basements, Fraternal posts.

Often, FLGS prefers players of whatever games that are on their shelves, not unreasonably, given modern costs of rent, energy and staff. This narrows the field a bit, as far as game choices go.

Also, many FLGS's have, in my observation, accepted a deal with the devil of Collectable Card Games, and are usually chock-a-block full of rather noisy young'uns on prime days (weekends).

(I know, we're supposed to be harvesting these sprites for more sophisticated gaming…)

Keith F.

An FLGS – what's one of those? Surely they're just legend…?

The closest that still has Battlefront products is @ 500 miles.

Is the goal of the club to move product or play games?

We are very lucky, we have excellent vFLGS Warband. They support not only what they sell. From time when they opened, number of players is growing as never. New players, old players back in the game. Good shop helps very much.

Is that Gilfoyle at the back on the right?
