Apart from the tools, is there anything about their uniform that distinguishes them from simple fusiliers?

I like these a lot.

compared with the simple fusiliers:
- they carry a short sword
- greatcoat is blue (like the guard, not like line and light infantry)
- colours of the uniform are different (no white)

Depends – There are also Engineers of the Guard – "Genies" . They have a crested helmet , just like the armoured French Carabiniers.
