Didn't know trenches ever went out of fashion. In static areas of the line you dig. In defense you dig. Nothing really changes.

Sandbags and blast barricades are effectively trenches, just portable. Purpose is the same: shield defenders. They're used all over the place.

maneuver warfare has always been fighting against static defenses. Digging in never goes out of fashion, but wars are won on the offense.
