I was talking to the guy on the Lance & Longbow society stand at the Campaign show yesterday about flags. He was saying that many internet flags are wrong as they should show the animals facing towards the flag pole, although he did then say that this 'standard' (if you'll forgive the pun) sometimes took a while until everyone adhered to it. I mention this because all of these 4 flag sheets have all the animals facing away from the flag pole (except for Sir Marmaduke De Twenge, where the face toward the pole on one side and away on the other). |

This raises an interesting question then: If i have a standard that is supported in the middle by the pole, which way should it (the animal) face? Or is this a convention of badly sculpted fantasy miniatures? |

The are nice looking flags regardless of which direction the animals are facing. I didn't know that about the animals though, interesting. |

Err, the rules of heraldry say that the flagstaff is automatically dexter (to the right of the person carrying the arms, to the left of the viewer), so it depends on which way the animal faces on the shield – if it faces dexter, then it faces the staff, if it faces sinister then it faces away from the staff. Banners and flags, etc, are sewn so that both sides show the same realtion to the flagstaff (this is why the starry bit of the American flag is always against the staff, even if the flag is "backwards" on one side). |

Banners and flags could also be painted, like the Burgundian ones. |

Chris, I have not seen that version of a banner for Edward I, very cool. What is your source for it?? Thanks – Allen |
