Yes, those early years of experimentation must have involved a lot of crashes and chute failures.

There is pre-war video of the parachutists walking out onto the wings of the planes and sliding off – no thanks!

Sounds an interesting book. I wish it covered the whole war, there were quite a few combat jumps after 1941. Maybe there will be a sequel.
I'll certainly be getting this one.

d88mm1940, thanks for that link. Very informative. I did not know of the massive development of airborne forces in the Soviet Union. Love those open air bombers. The raid on Bessarabia would make an interesting game.
