Received my copy today. It looks good. and seems to do what it says on the tin ! Essex has wrongly been rubbished as a general for too long largely because Waller and others dropped him in it at Lostwithiel.
Yet the First Newbury campaign arguably saved the Parliamentarian cause.

Well, the Earl of Essex was rightly criticised for his decision to advance further and further into the West Country at precisely the time that he and Sir William Waller had the King at a huge military disadvantage in the Midlands. His belief in the far too optimistic reports by Lord Robarts that the West would rally for Parliament can be laid at his door as well, which led to his defeat at Lostwithiel.

I also welcome this book and will interested to read how he saved the
Parlimentarian cause at Edgehill, Brentford, and First Newbury.

My copy was in this mornings post and I am very impressed.
Its a nicely produced paperback which uses the space very sensibly to provide a logical and coherent history of the Parliamentary Field Army and its Commander.

Shame the publisher could not provide an index, but at this price for such an original subject it is entirely understandable. Personally I would have liked a bit more on the political command structure and his relationship with the committee for safety, though maybe that's for a different book.

I can't see anyone being disappointed with this book, if you have any interest in the ECW buy it and support a golden age for ECW publishing.
