The few reviews on Amazon say that this book sucks. Anyone have it that can give an opinion here? Dan |

Most of the reviews on Amazon seem to based on the absence of any maps from the book and a somewhat inadequate selection of ones referenced int he book on the author's website. It seems like an actual review of the book as a whole would be very helpful. Chris |

Even if the info is good; numerous typos? I just finished reading a book on the Java Sea Campaign that had a few typos and erroneous facts in it (i.e. BB with 15" guns stated as having 16" guns) and tho most of the info was enlightening, I can't help but dwell on how much more enjoyable it would have been to read, had the editors done their job (if there are such a thing as publishing editors any more.) |

One review on the first chapter was particularly damning. Dan |

It appears from looking at the reviews on Amazon that this book is a bit like Marmite. You either love it or hate it, there doesn't seem to be a middle ground. 2 reviewers gave it 5 stars, whilst another two only gave it 1 star. The main gripes seem to be that it should have been published as two volumes, instead of with online support which includes the 178 maps that don't appear in the book itself, along with figures for economics, logistics, POWs, submarines, kamikaze and a timeline. There are criticisms of the first chapter, but one reviewer says that if the author had missed out the scene setting and got straight into the war the reader wouldn't have missed much, and the book improves dramatically as you get into it.It still appears to be great value for money at the price when you get over 1000 pages of print plus the online additions as well. |
