Nice ships – might be just a touch large to go with some other lines, but nothing insurmountable.

Doug

Dervel Fezian20 Nov 2009 9:16 a.m. PST

Very nice looking fleets.

What are the sizes of the ships? Did I miss that?

Garand20 Nov 2009 9:17 a.m. PST

Hmmm…am I the only one that took a look at these and said "Mon Calamari from Star Wars!"?

Damon.

Grizwald20 Nov 2009 9:22 a.m. PST

1 x Starter Fleet (10 Models)
1 x Battleship
2 x Cruisers
6 x Frigates
$137.95 USD

??? At those prices I'll stick to GZG:

1 x Battleship (SuperDreadnought)
2 x Cruisers (Heavy)
6 x Frigates
£24.00 GBP

Unrepentant Werewolf20 Nov 2009 9:24 a.m. PST

Biggest ships in the fleets are approx 17cm long.
Unfortunately Spartan haven't posted prices in their webstore yet!

BobSlaughter20 Nov 2009 9:30 a.m. PST

UW: prices are in the PDF behind the "Firestorm Guide" link near the top of the page.

Mike: note that the package is a starter set of 10 ship *plus* an extra BB, 2CA, and 6 FF. Still a bit more than GZG's prices, but not quite the gap.

Earl of the North20 Nov 2009 9:42 a.m. PST

Nope……that was my first reaction too. evil grin

Grizwald20 Nov 2009 9:56 a.m. PST

"Mike: note that the package is a starter set of 10 ship"

Anyone know what's in the starter set then?
Assuming a similar mix to the additional ships, then 19 similar ships from GZG would still only cost about £50.00 GBP (or about $80 USD at today's exchange rate). That's about 2/3rds the price of these.

They'd have to be VERY nice models to justify that sort of price differential.

Dervel Fezian20 Nov 2009 10:10 a.m. PST

Actually I am always looking for ships to add to our Star Wars Fleet :)

the evil morlab20 Nov 2009 10:10 a.m. PST

Hmmm…am I the only one that took a look at these and said "Mon Calamari from Star Wars!"?

the ships on the bottom also appear to be more than a little like the CGI ships in a solitaire "battleship" type computer game I've had on my PC for a few years. i think there are only so many design concepts in sci fi out there that have broad acceptability and appeal!

anyway, i like these -- they look neat, and it's great to see a new system.

the evil morlab20 Nov 2009 10:36 a.m. PST

Anyone know what's in the starter set then?

it's hidden deep within the news item:

1 x Starter Fleet (10 Models)

also note what's written on the images. grin

are GZG battleship models five inches long?

Grizwald20 Nov 2009 11:08 a.m. PST

"are GZG battleship models five inches long?"

Some are. I presume not all of these models are either.

"it's hidden deep within the news item:"

If you mean the news item on TMP, I'm sorry, I couldn't find it.

On the LSOM site I did find that each fleet seems to consist of 4 different packs.
Battleship (1 model)
Cruisers (2 models)
Frigates (6 models)
Carrier (1 model)
One pack of each type adds up to 10 models – is that what you meant?

Incidentally, the prices shown here:
PDF link

are in GBP rather than USD (as in the TMP news item) and seem far more reasonable and comparable to GZG, if a little more expensive, but nowhere near the USD prices!

"also note what's written on the images."

um … what's written on the images?

axabrax20 Nov 2009 11:17 a.m. PST

Where can we find an abstract of the rules?

Top Gun Ace20 Nov 2009 11:20 a.m. PST

It would be nice to know what vessels are in the squadron deal. Presumably smaller ones than in the Flotilla pack, since it costs half the price of the latter.

Also, the Flotilla pack only lists 9 vessels, and not the 10 that should be there.

Grizwald20 Nov 2009 11:27 a.m. PST

"What are the sizes of the ships? Did I miss that?"
"Biggest ships in the fleets are approx 17cm long."
"are GZG battleship models five inches long?"

Apparently the length of each ship is given here:
link
and vary from 1.8in to 6.7in

Grizwald20 Nov 2009 11:29 a.m. PST

"Where can we find an abstract of the rules?"

I wouldn't bother. Just get a copy of Full Thrust (free) here:

"also note what's written on the images."

um … what's written on the images?

um, why not look at the images and discover for yourself? ok i'll help you out, it says "starter fleet," so that should give one some idea what's in the starter fleets, i'd imagine. grin

"Where can we find an abstract of the rules?"

I wouldn't bother. Just get a copy of Full Thrust (free) here:

rather hard to play "firestorm armada" with a copy of the "full thrust" rules. grin

Grizwald20 Nov 2009 11:51 a.m. PST

"ok i'll help you out, it says "starter fleet," so that should give one some idea what's in the starter fleets, i'd imagine."

Oh, yes, I noticed that. Unfortunately it doesn't tell you what each ship type in the picture is… Not only that but there aren't 10 ships in each picture either …

"rather hard to play "firestorm armada" with a copy of the "full thrust" rules."

What's in a name? It's just spaceship gaming – does it really matter?

As far as I can see the starter fleet pack for each of the factions available consists of:

1 Battleship
3 Cruisers
6 Frigates

Also seems like it would be cheaper and better value (1 extra cruiser) to get 2 fleet packs rather than the second flotilla offer…..which seems to be the fleet pack + another fleet pack minus a cruiser.

Grizwald20 Nov 2009 11:54 a.m. PST

Also in the picture of the Terran Starter Fleet (which does appear to have 10 ships), two of them (on the left) you can only see the prow – so what type they are is anybodys guess!

Grizwald20 Nov 2009 11:55 a.m. PST

"As far as I can see the starter fleet pack for each of the factions available consists of:

1 Battleship
3 Cruisers
6 Frigates"

That's odd since the cruisers appear to come in packs of 2.

Looking at Spartan games website

picture

picture

Both show the same number/types of ships for the four fleets.

Delthos20 Nov 2009 12:11 p.m. PST

That Sorylian Fleet resembles old time Steam Locomotives. I'm digging them! Must resist, no discretionary funds to use at this time…

Grizwald20 Nov 2009 12:14 p.m. PST

"Looking at Spartan games website

Unfortunately, those pictures do not say "Starter Fleet", so we are still none the wiser.

Martin20 Nov 2009 12:16 p.m. PST

Looks like how they packed their starter fleets for Uncharted Seas, 1 BB, 3 CA, and 6 FT.

Earl of the North20 Nov 2009 12:29 p.m. PST

Unfortunately, those pictures do not say "Starter Fleet", so we are still none the wiser.

The second link is to the cut out fleet (from the rulebook I believe) which says its a Terran Starter fleet (there is a second fleet that has the same numbers/types there as well)….it seems to match up with the flyers of the four fleets and the number of ships in the starter fleets, so I'm guessing its the 1 BB, 3 CA and 6 FT for all four starter fleets.

It would be nice if the pics for all four fleets showed exactly what was in the starter fleets.

I wont be pre-ordering from anybody, not least since nobody seems sure whats in the starter fleet packs…..besides I just bought two GZG fleet packs (+ 21 fighter squadrons) so I'm not buying this month anyway. grin

Confused TMPr's:

The 'for more information link' provided in the news release (www.shopofmagic.com/portal/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=842) points to an article we posted on our website on November 6th – it features pictures of every starter fleet and blister along with a rather useful .pdf guide for those interested in learning more about the game.

To summarize the offers:

Squadron Deals = 10 models total.
Flotilla Deals = 19 models total.
Fleet Deals = 40 models + rulebook and accessories.

Everyone else:

Thank you for your orders – we will process and ship just as soon as they hit the US shore.

Grizwald20 Nov 2009 3:18 p.m. PST

"Squadron Deals = 10 models total.
Flotilla Deals = 19 models total."

Unfortunately, this doesn't really help. There is a significant difference between the value of 10 frigates and 10 battleships.

Unless you explain exactly the composition in terms of ship types and numbers of each squadron or flotilla deal we are stll none the wiser.

Unrepentant Werewolf 220 Nov 2009 5:18 p.m. PST

Bob Slaughter,
UW: prices are in the PDF behind the "Firestorm Guide" link near the top of the page.

Sorry, can't see anything with a price on it!

CaesarCovi21 Nov 2009 12:15 a.m. PST

Mike Snorbens:

Okkeee dooke then, Flotilla deal = 1 starter fleet (1 Battleship, 3 cruisers, 6 frigates) + 1 Battleship + 2 cruisers + 6 frigates = 19 models total…..

Earl of the North21 Nov 2009 2:28 a.m. PST

Maybe it's just the medication (ear infection) but……

Squadron Deal:
1 x Starter Fleet (10 Models)
$59.99 USD USD = Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price
$47.99 USD USD = Our Price

You save $12.00 USD

Flotilla Deal:
1 x Starter Fleet (10 Models)
1 x Battleship
2 x Cruisers
6 x Frigates
$137.95 USD USD = Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price
$103.46 USD USD = Our Price

You save $34.49 USD USD and get free shipping within the continental United States.

2 X Starter Fleet (20 Models)

$95.98 USD

Seems like the Flotilla Deal is a bit pointless, buy two of the Starter Fleets, save money and get a extra Cruiser.

Maybe the free shipping makes it a good deal?

PS

Thanks for the info on the Starter Fleet.

CaesarCovi22 Nov 2009 2:10 p.m. PST

Free shipping….

Zyphyr22 Nov 2009 2:36 p.m. PST

Part of the issue with the pricing is in the MSRP.

2 Squadron = 119.98
Flotilla = 137.95

That is $19.97 USD more for one less cruiser.

Given that these are resin (per the Spartan Games website), shipping shouldn't be all that bad.

At least the LSoM deal cuts the price difference quite a bit.

Still not a good deal though.

The Fleet deal seems quite reasonable though (assuming you like all 4 fleets enough to want to buy them).
4 Starter = 191.96
Fleet = 203.65
11.69 to cover the rulebook ($25 normally) and other things, as well as the free shipping.
