Nice tool! What scale is it? |

YES I WANT ONE OF THESE!!!!! |
mmitchell | 09 Mar 2009 12:19 p.m. PST |
A few questions before I order a pair of 'em
Do they stand up on their own? They look a bit lopsided, like they might fall over. Are the numbers on one side, or both sides? By the way, I plan to order a pair because I'm going to base one on a standard fender washer (which is how I base most of my minis) so I can set it next to my based minis and get a more accurate measurement. ------------- By the way, this is an AWESOME tool. |

It's not a scale stick: it's a size stick
|

I take pictures on a level piece of glass and they stand on their own.. They are a bit heavy to one side and will bump over rather easily if you don't take care. If you were to place the on an uneven surface though, you may have trouble getting them to stand. Yes the numbers are on both sides. The picture shown is of two together taken at the same time. It's not a photoshoped mirror or anything so you actually are seeing both sided of the devise. I made this for my own photos to avoid the inevitable "what scale is it?" questions. I hadn't actually planned on making them for others until I got so many requests. I did make the numbers a little larger than the prototype for ease of reading. I considered putting it on a tab so it would fit in a slotted base but the consensus seemed to be making it free standing is better. We put the micrometer on these and didn't actually get as much shrink as we anticipated. The ones we have been measuring have been between 1 tenth of 1 millimeter and 3 tenths of one millimeter long over all. I thought that was close enough for our purpose with these. |

It's not a scale stick: it's a size stick
True enough. It's meant to show size in spite of the claimed scale. |
| Condottiere | 09 Mar 2009 12:48 p.m. PST |
I assume that this stick is meant to be placed upright next to an upright miniature--and the measuring stick has a "base." What if the base of the miniature is thicker or thinner? |
| Mrs Antenociti | 09 Mar 2009 12:55 p.m. PST |
what is the height of the 0mm marker from the ground? (5mm for standard slotta base?) We could use these but at USD$15.00 / £10.87p to get one to the uk its a tad too much money. Nice idea though. |
| Brandlin | 09 Mar 2009 1:08 p.m. PST |
wow and up until now i've been using one of those old fashioned out-of-date ruler thingies
|
| Chrismiss | 09 Mar 2009 1:15 p.m. PST |
What if the base of the miniature is thicker or thinner? The bases of my miniatures are 4mm thick. Naturally, this was made to show the size of my miniatures on my bases. If other companies make their bases the wrong size, I can't be accountable to that. We could use these but at USD$15.00 / £10.87p to get one to the uk its a tad too much money. If you get 5, the shipping is free. |

Ah, so it does take into account the basing (at least your standard basing). That's still cool. The problem with rulers and tape measures are: - getting them to stand up in the back of the mini - almost all of them have a significant lead area before the "0" mark, making it hard to use them to accurately measure the mini. - because they contain so much info, they are actually harder to read in a photo (even more pronounced when the photo is reduced to a thumbnail in a shopping cart) |

Love the idea. Just ordered a few and will be using them in our future photos of Darkson miniatures. |

Ah, I just won (and spent) a bunch on Ebay and with three manufacturers but the next payday is only in two weeks. I hope there is one left by then. Ooooh, Free shipping for 5? Hi, I'm Glenn <"Hello, Glenn!"> and I'm a 'free shipping' junky! Gracias, Glenn |

I can see that a manufacturer might find it useful to demonstrate size--the rest of us would frown and nod sagely, having demonstrated that the "28mm" figure is really 30mm.Which we knew anyway.[is there an expanding version to cater for scale creep?] |
| Condottiere | 09 Mar 2009 3:35 p.m. PST |
The bases of my miniatures are 4mm thick. Naturally, this was made to show the size of my miniatures on my bases.<q/>They are only suitable for your miniatures then? If other companies make their bases thewrong size, I can't be accountable to that. So, you've also declared what the standard is for the industry? |
fortressfigures | 09 Mar 2009 3:57 p.m. PST |
Wouldn't it be kind of silly not to make them for your own figures? |
| CeruLucifus | 09 Mar 2009 3:57 p.m. PST |
That is cool. I have no miniatures to sell and may get some anyway
if for no other reason than to take into toy stores and hold up next to playset figures. |
| Alxbates | 09 Mar 2009 4:00 p.m. PST |
I like it! Very nice idea! |
| Cheriton | 09 Mar 2009 4:08 p.m. PST |
I feel this sort of thing should be standard in all figure images, commercial or otherwise. Any time where the question will inevitably arise "what scale are they; how do they compare to
". OK, that was two questions, still a great idea to help mitigate the usual number of resulting threads. |
| The GM | 09 Mar 2009 5:23 p.m. PST |
I've got a ruler that has zero lead space on it that I use, then I can measure from base up or from table-top up
But I may pick some of these up. Making that ruler stand reliably is painful ;-). Don. |
| religon | 10 Mar 2009 8:54 a.m. PST |
I hope this idea is adopted. Wouldn't it be a kick in the pants if something like this helped ease the pain of scale creep? |
| Mrs Antenociti | 10 Mar 2009 8:59 a.m. PST |
If you get 5, the shipping is free. Why would I want five of them? Oh well, never mind then. (I'll get Jed to make me one instead.) |

Any orders over $25.00 USD get free shipping world wide and they still get complaints about shipping costs. |
| Mrs Antenociti | 10 Mar 2009 6:19 p.m. PST |
Fortress Figures: Why would I want to spend $25USd to buy a $5 USD item to avoid a $10 USD shipping charge? How much do these little scale things weigh that they cost $10 USD to ship? Why cant they go into an airmail envelope? Perhaps I am being a little bit blonde; so please feel free to explain to the dense female what I am so obviously missing? |
fortressfigures | 10 Mar 2009 7:27 p.m. PST |
I don't know why you would do that. It's your option to do it or not do it. In my opinion, the shipping policy is more than reasonable. I do find it a bit of a surprise that anyone is complaining about the shipping prices. This is just my personal opinion. It has nothing to do with you being female. I'm sorry if I offended you in any way. |
