That's certainly a clever way to model horse armor. Hang it from him!

Great Perry release, I need to build and paint more before I start buying oodles though ;-)

Field Marshal02 Apr 2012 6:13 p.m. PST

Im going to get tons of these….I am going to use the crossbow arms from the infantry to make mounted crossbowmen for the early Italian Wars!!

SultanSevy02 Apr 2012 6:24 p.m. PST

Excellent, as always from the Perry brothers.

Mako1102 Apr 2012 6:35 p.m. PST

Osprey 136, "Italian Medieval Armies" has some full-color plates of these guys.

Brilliant. Let's see 3,4 or 5 boxes?

wrgmr102 Apr 2012 7:51 p.m. PST

Dang, they've done it again. Just when I thought I shouldn't buy any more figures…..

Excellent, as always.

Pedrobear02 Apr 2012 9:03 p.m. PST

Looking at the sprues, it looks like there isn't enough armour to armour all 12 horses?

I guess that means hunting for bitz on ebay then…

msoong02 Apr 2012 10:02 p.m. PST

Very "skinny" looking compare to other Perry figures…
I like the fact they are more "anatomically correct", but might not match with other vendor who tend to be more robust figures…

Mick in Switzerland02 Apr 2012 11:54 p.m. PST

I like that you can also make lighter cavalry with the same set – an unexpected bonus.

Dawnbringer03 Apr 2012 12:07 a.m. PST

It looks like there is 2 sets of each type of horse armour on each rider sprue *3 and you get 12. So there is enough, but you might need a couple boxes if you want all of one type.

Mick in Switzerland03 Apr 2012 1:56 a.m. PST

@Dawnbringer,

Only half of the troops can have horse armour.

If you look at the horse armour, there are 4 parts – left, right, front and back. Therefore there are two sets of horse armour on each sprue which make six sets in the box.

For me that is OK. I want a mix of armoured and unarmoured cavalry.

Mick

jameshammyhamilton03 Apr 2012 1:56 a.m. PST

Hmm, 3 boxes I think, plus at least one more box of the mercenaries. Then I have a huge painting job on my hands. These are gorgeous.

nickinsomerset03 Apr 2012 2:15 a.m. PST

Are there any rules/Battles where one could field about 70 of these type chaps per side?

Tally Ho!

Porkmann03 Apr 2012 3:10 a.m. PST

They look spiffy. Hopefully I can resist expanding my Imperialists…

Atheling03 Apr 2012 3:49 a.m. PST

Superb stuff! Late Medieval wargaming has never been so accessible in terms of price.

Think of the possibilities!!!

Does anybody know if there are also new metals coming (e.g. Burgundian and Swiss Command)?

essayons703 Apr 2012 4:18 a.m. PST

Outstanding! These will definitely find their way to my (overloaded) painting table…..

Wow…I don't do medievals and have to say that these are nice!

desmondo03 Apr 2012 4:27 a.m. PST

I hope the van for Salute is big enough as these are going to sell out VERY fast

Porkmann03 Apr 2012 4:39 a.m. PST

If you look hard enough you can see the Perrys in the cab.

Dawnbringer03 Apr 2012 4:41 a.m. PST

@Mick,

Looking at the sprues I see 4 halves of the Italian style horse armour, and 8 quarters of the German style horse armour. This sums up to 4 (2+2) sets of armour per 4 riders, meaning that you'd have enough for all, though you'd have 2 different styles, but the riders are in different styles of armour anyway.

Griefbringer03 Apr 2012 5:00 a.m. PST

What dawnbringer says – there seems to be enough horse armour for all of the horses. And as for the other items (heads, arms and weapons), there seems to be quite plentiful supply – luckily I happen to have a few dismounted men-at-arms that I can also use those on.

Are there any rules/Battles where one could field about 70 of these type chaps per side?

I would recommend taking a look at the 15th century Italian condotta armies, those tended to pack quite a lot of heavy cavalry. There was a fair bit of fighting between the various Italian states.

You might want to trade some of the figures in Germanic armour for more figures in Italian armour, though.

Mick in Switzerland03 Apr 2012 5:14 a.m. PST

@Dawnbringer
OK – I understand your point.
Mick

kallman03 Apr 2012 5:48 a.m. PST

Great idea about mounted cross bowmen Field Marshall. As to rules to use Nick, I think a large game of Warhammer Armies of Chivalry will fit the bill. Just about any battle from the Italian Wars, some War of the Roses battles, or Late Medieval battles between France, Burgandy, and the Holy Roman Empire. The forth coming Hail Caesar! Pike and Shotte rules may work well for this as well.

essayons703 Apr 2012 6:40 a.m. PST

I've also used GW's LOTR rules in several games. I'm sure there are many others that would work just as well if not better…

RayHaskins03 Apr 2012 8:44 a.m. PST

I am certainly geeting a few boxes.

Griefbringer03 Apr 2012 10:44 a.m. PST

I like that you can also make lighter cavalry with the same set – an unexpected bonus.

The lightness might be debatable – that cavalryman still seems to be wearing full plate armour on those parts of the body not covered by the livery coat.

Still, combining that body with a lighter helmet and the standard pole (as a light lance) looks like an innovative combination of the pieces available in the set. I might try making a few of those.

__________________________________________________________

As for the painting guides that some people asked, these should be pretty straightforward:

1.) Undercoat the whole model black
2.) Paint all the horse armour, rider armour and weapon heads/blades in metallic colour (steel)
3.) Paint weapon shafts in wooden colour
4.) Paint horseflesh in whatever colours you use for painting horseflesh
5.) Paint saddles and saddlecloths in appropriate colour
6.) Add a coat of varnish (optional)

That should cover most of the pieces on the sprue, though there might be a few items needing a bit of extra work: leather straps, faces, plumes and pennons. Also one of the riders is wearing a livery coat, the colours of that would depend on whose retinue he might be serving.

As for standards, there is a good selection of them included with the kit itself.

Pretty much "light" cavalry of this period at least in places like Italy. The front cover of Osprey 136, "Italian Medieval Armies" (referenced above) shows an Italian "Light" cavalryman from the mid 15th century in the background:

This box is just looking better and better for every teaser they release! First I will get the necessay heavy cavalry for my condottiere company, and then some lighter cavalry. Hopefully also some mounted crossbowmen and perhaps even some mounted pages.

Perrys always cause such a stir!

basileus6603 Apr 2012 11:08 p.m. PST

I was waiting for these guys before committing myself to collect a XVth Century retinue… Now I must decide if I will go North (Burgundy and France) or South (Italy).

Griefbringer04 Apr 2012 1:58 a.m. PST

Now I must decide if I will go North (Burgundy and France) or South (Italy).

You could always do both!

Since the kit comes with a mixture of models in Italian and northern styles, you could build the Italian force using mainly models in the Italian style armour, and then use the others to make a more northern style force.

@Mick re: metals, I havent heard about anything new but Id love to see some Scots spear, Irish Kern and Gallowglass.

A plastic set of foot men at arms would b nice too.

Griefbringer05 Apr 2012 3:12 a.m. PST

Regarding metals, in a previous news release there was a picture of a model of Charles the Bold that will be also released at Salute.
