Maybe things have changed. But back in '79-'90 an Airborne Assault was by Parachute. And Air Assault was done by Helicopters … huh?

Well I'm not that old Bill !!!! old fart But instead of the WWII Glider Wing Badge. After we passed Air Assault School we were awarded the Air Assault badge. Which had the front view of a UH-1 instead of the Glider. So many of us had both the Parachute Wings and Air Assault Wings on our uniforms.

One time when I was at an airport waiting to fly out on leave. A little kid asked his dad, if I was the pilot ! LOL ! I guess he figured since I had two sets of wings on my jacket, I must be the pilot ! wink

You're absolutely right. Originally airborne assault was roughly 50% helicopters and the rest divided between paratroopers and gliders. However the mechanics for paratroopers and gliders didn't quite fit with the rest of the game – they were a fun feature but were unrealistic. We simplified the rules for airborne forces and put them in the main rulebook. That just left the helicopters in airborne assault, but we kept the name without really taking into account that the content had changed.
We have now updated the name so that it is more fitting for to the content.
