Are these direct only or are they going to be going through distribution channels? In the USA? Canada?

Looks like the box comes with shield transfers which is a nice touch I think. I will be interested and knowing how these compare in size to Foundry, Black Tree, and Crusader ranges.

Can't wait for mine! I preordered last week…

These were for real after all!
Never thought to do 28mm, but wavering.
Hope the best to WG and that sales may allow the range to flourish.

Hmmm they are not the first, Heroics and Ros did 25mm (as it was back then) hard plastic roman legionaries, but this company has ex-GW staff so hyperbole is to be expected.

they are not the first

For "the first" read "before the other lot"… :-)

Nothing wrong with a healthy rivalry mind you. Good luck to Warlord, they're nice figures if the WI freebie was anything to go by.

"I will be interested and knowing how these compare in size to Foundry, Black Tree, and Crusader ranges."

Here are a few comparitive pictures. The only ones I would put them with are the Perry Foundry Romans or the Newline Design figures. Slighter and shorter than the others (but lovely!)

Hi Nathaniel,

Yes, we have retailers and distributors taking these worldwide. We're adding more everyday so you should have no problem finding these in stores.

If your local hobby shop doesn't currently have the line please get them to contact us and we'll make sure they do!

Cheers,

legatushedlius:
thanks for the comparisons!
this is the type of info I like to see at TMP. Useful that!
cheers

I'll second the info legatushedlius, it was very useful.

(Sigh)Well I suppose I will be sticking to my Saleh/Crusader Romans. The figures are beautiful but there is just too much of a differnce from the photos to get the minis to match with what I already have.

From the comparison comment: 'Given I have quite large painted Ancient German and Celt armies I am not going to use out of scale Romans against them.'

Actually I'd say they would be perfectly in scale, as ancient sources are all in agreement that German and Celt were of giant stature (compared to ancient Romans that is, who averaged 1.6 meters!) and towered over their own soldiers…

That would only work for republican to early Imperial of of curse, as in the later army the vast majority of legionaries were actually German themselves…

Ho, and the other Mediterranean types were considerably shorter than Romans BTW… ;)

I would have no trouble using the plastics next to the existing metals. there is a very slight height difference, but the heft is close enough for use.

it seems to me that if you randomly mixed them in with your existing Romans, it would just look like natural human height variations.

just my $0.02 USD

I really hope these sell well for them. Seeing more companies get into plastic (especially fairly modular plastic) is a Good Thing in my opinion.

Spectacle13 May 2008 9:57 p.m. PST

Speaking of height differences, does anyone know how the romans handled soldiers of different heights in the maniples? In close formation it would make sense to have legionaries of similar height standing next to each other to present as unified a front as possible..

Spectacle13 May 2008 10:00 p.m. PST

Sorry about the double post, but I just started wondering if there are any bases included in the box?

Paul at Warlord Games13 May 2008 11:43 p.m. PST

Hi Spectacle,

Each model comes with it's own oval-shaped integrated base.

As we know gamers play lots of different games all with their own basing convention we didn't want to be prescriptive on which base they should use – this way you can base them how you like.

Hope that helps.

Can't speak for the Romans, but it's a fairly simple process to line everyone up on by height on a parade ground and form your ranks there. Once a soldier knows where he stands he can take that position each time. The usual British method ends up with the shortest in the middle of each rank as it looks more impressive to have the tall ones at each end.

"Actually I'd say they would be perfectly in scale.."

It's not height it's things like head size (in particular), size of shield. seize of weapons.

But they are so nice I am wavering… maybe I will paint up my test figure..
