What sets this apart from other gladiator games?

Earthquake17 Apr 2014 2:24 p.m. PST

One of the main features is that the game, and combat, features teams of gladiators from up to 4 players.

The game is also completely diceless, but rather uses a card deck. It's much more reminiscient of a boardgame rather than a skirmish wargame – it marries the best of both worlds rather well.

Size of the minis? Sure hope they are compatible with all the others I and so many others already have.

morrigan17 Apr 2014 5:05 p.m. PST

Says 32mm.

kallman17 Apr 2014 6:17 p.m. PST

Nope these are going to be bigger which is a pity as I already have many Foundry and Crusader gladiators.

Bummer. Nice as they are, not going to another scale.

GB site states they are a 35mm range of multipart figures to allow different Gladiator types, poses etc.

Looking at the pictures on various sites it seems the important thing is the base that fits in the grid. I can't see why 28mm chaps wouldn't work?

I am sure you can use any size miniatures on the appropriate base to play the game.

I'm always up for a good Gladiator game, but I do agree about the poor choice of scale. I suppose if you are new to the genre it doesn't matter, but I have a fair collection of 25-28mm gladiator miniatures already. If I do give this game a try, 'll just use my existing collectiona and won't be buying any of the GB miniatures to go with it due to the scale.

This seems to be a trend, these days.

I am too. My point is that although these are nice, attractive figs I won't be buying them to play the game. I suspect many others will make the same choice.

So the business decision has to be whether as Caesar points out to follow the trend of bigger figs because that is the direction of scale (more than) creep with the expectation that their figs are just so gosh darn awesome that folks can't live without them, or, go with a compatible size with what is currently out there, knowing there are likely far more "I don't really need them but they look neat and are a new shiny so I'se just gots to have 'em" gamers than there are "Nice figs but I already bought some that I can use."

I know there are folks in both camps, but suspect that there are, and TMP sure indicates there are far, far more "new shiny" camp personnel than there are "I am a responsible purchaser of only what I absolutely need" gamers.

Just to point out, these miniatures are not just 'scale creep' 28mm miniatures. They are pretty much 40mm minis – compatible with the old Trident Design range, if you remember those?

However, we've just played the game with 28mm Crusader minis (which are actually used extensively in photographs throughout the rulebook)so the game can easily be played using you existing 28mm Gladiators, and they fit perfectly well on both the provided playsheet, and the larger vinyl mat that GB sell.

Indeed, seems to me scale means naught regarding playability. As far as GB selling a line at 40mm, more power to them. Some nice detail to paint up in 40mm, and if you did not want to buy that scale so be it. Get the rules only and game on!

RazorMind, I agree completely. I don't know what the big deal is regarding the scale of the figures. How many Gladiators do you need? Certainly no more than 8 – 12, so if you are just getting into the game, you buy what you like, regardless of scale. To me, the only off putting thing is the price of the figures.

WarWizard19 Apr 2014 4:29 a.m. PST

I like the larger scale figures for small skirmish games like this. Battle Honors still makes 40MM scale gladiators I think.

Will be using 54mm that are already painted and ready to go.
