Hurray. I can't wait to order this. Too bad something ate up all my ready hobby money. I have to wait a week, hopefully it won't kill me.

Duc de Limbourg02 Nov 2009 10:32 a.m. PST

Why "hurrah" ?. Haven't read about this rules, so please explain.

M. le Duc,

Visit the League of Augsburg site and forum for more information, including several page previews.

Uhhh,

Guess I'm not too sharp.

Exactly where are the reviews?

For me Hurray because it's a ruleset created by a couple of gamers who I wish to emulate, it contains information on 1812 and the book looks very pretty.

MikeHobbs02 Nov 2009 11:58 a.m. PST

@Coyote

I completely agree with you and I feel I should add my own Hurrah in that annoyingly loud voice I use for news like this

the fact that it has info on the War of 1812 just makes it a must buy for me

Thanks for the link, Ed. The preview looks awesome.

I agree that War of 1812 material is a significant plus.

Duc de Limbourg02 Nov 2009 3:09 p.m. PST

thanks for the info and links, will look into it

The rules do look pretty! Tempted, but if I am going to edge into Napoleonic games, I need to start with skirmish games (not least because I will have to paint both armies).

vtsaogames02 Nov 2009 9:13 p.m. PST

I await a review by someone who has played the game. I have 15mm armies at 1:50 scale. I can see using two or three units to make a single larger one at 1:20… if the game is over in 2 to 3 hours.

Coyote Fezian02 Nov 2009 9:27 p.m. PST

mweaver, you may do well with March of Eagles which is the free, basic rules that come with Victrix. Once you're ready for R2E the transition will be easy, Barry Hilton wrote them as well. Missing artillery and cavalry, perhaps when Victrix makes some.

BravoX02 Nov 2009 11:34 p.m. PST

"Once you're ready for R2E the transition will be easy, Barry Hilton wrote them as well"

So does this mean than R2E is an upgraded version of "March of Eagles"?

Quindia03 Nov 2009 4:55 a.m. PST

I don't think MoE and R2E are really very similar…

I took a look at MoE to search for similar concepts and nothing really stands out as being the same. The artillery and cavalry rules might bear more similarity, but of course will not be available until Victrix releases these models.

mweaver03 Nov 2009 5:25 a.m. PST

Thanks, Coyote. I have already purchased the Sharpe Practice rules. I have one set of Victrix British, and some French on order.

Looks very good. I think I'll pre-order a copy.

I am still hunting for that elusive set of rules that works for me. I have acculmulated General de Brigade, Napoleon, and most recently Black Powder.

General de Brigade looks good, has stood the test of time, but emphasizes the "friction" of moving large units across terrain. It looks like a decent simulation but I wonder if it plays fast and fun, or bogs down a bit.

Napoleon looks good to, but there I'd like to be able to field skimishers, and in these rules the presence of skirmishers is abstracted. Which is fine, but its just not what I'm looking for. As a bonus the book is very nicely put together with very high production values.

I have been reading through my newly arrived copy of Black Powder and it is a top quality publication. However, I can't help thinking that it is a bit of an indulgance (the authors admit as much in the book). I wish I could, but I don't think I will be able to field the massive 28mm armies any time soon nor do I have a 12 foot long table. I look forward to reading the experiences of early adopters with more modest gaming resources. But the book is very well written, very amusing, and the photographs are simply mouthwatering.

This is why I am hoping that R2E will be simple a fast-play set of rules for smaller armies and smaller (normal sized) tables. And it looks like it will have the same high production values as Napoleon and Black Powder.

The other set that has caught my eye is Lasalle. I don't know anything about this, but I look forward to the article in next month's Wargames Illustrated for more info. Again this looks like it will be a hardback with high production values.

The search goes on…

Quindia04 Nov 2009 3:51 p.m. PST

REPUBLIC TO EMPIRE certainly works well on giant tables with multiple corps per side and Barry and crew have played games in that fashion, but all of my play tests were in the range of two 28mm brigades per side on a 4x6' table.

vtsaogames04 Nov 2009 4:00 p.m. PST

How long did those games take, Quindia?

Quindia04 Nov 2009 5:23 p.m. PST

About three hours – maybe less once you're comfortable with the rules and not stopping to take notes! The book comes with a six page, tri-fold play screen that was all most of the play testers needed after a few games.
