Books…

An Uniforme Order and Discipline Amongst U.S.: Volume 1: Make Ready, Training in Arms Handling 1590-1650

An Uniforme Order and Discipline Amongst U.S.: Volume 1: Make Ready, Training in Arms Handling 1590-1650 Exceptionally well illustrated with plates from Drill Manuals. Includes complete set of plates and translations for Exercise of Armes and Le Mareschal de Bataile, the French 1647 manual. This is the first in a series of books on the military theory and practice introduced by the reforms of Prince Maurice of Orange. These reforms were then developed further by the Dutch and other armies through practical use during the 30YW and ECW. The objective of this series is to set out the perspective of contemporary soldiers on the military systems they used in their own words and with the illustrations used in contemporary military books and pamphlets. Essentially, what contemporary soldiers thought they were doing, and how they went about it and the advantages and disadvantages they saw in doing so. $60.00 USD

They Were Good Soldiers: African-Americans Serving in the Continental Army, 1775-1783

They Were Good Soldiers: African-Americans Serving in the Continental Army, 1775-1783 The role of African-Americans, most free but some enslaved, in the regiments of the Continental Army is not well-known; neither is the fact that relatively large numbers served in southern regiments and that the greatest number served alongside their white comrades in integrated units. Includes 8 pages of color plates, 14 black-and-white illustrations, 5 tables, and one map. Discusses the inclusion and treatment of black Americans by the various Crown forces (particularly British and Loyalist commanders, and military units), then moves into an overview of black soldiers in the Continental Army, before examining their service state by state. $30.00 USD

OMM Discount 15%: Now $25.50 USD.

Military History of Late Rome: Volume 5 – 457-518 Examines the events that led to the collapse of West Rome, while East Rome not only survived but went on to prosper despite a series of major defeats that included, most notably, the catastrophic campaign against the Vandals in 468. Explains mistakes made by the West Romans and what the East Romans did right to survive. Analyses the role of the barbarian generals, military forces, and tactical developments during this pivotal period as cavalry, so famous from the accounts of Procopius, became the dominant arm in the East. Also offers a detailed study of a number of battles and puts them into the context of their times. At the very end of this period in 518, East Rome was poised to start its reconquest under Anastasius' successors Justin I and Justinian I. $53.00 USD

OMM Discount 15%: Now $45.05 USD.

Napoleon at Leipzig: The Battle of the Nations 1813 George Nafziger's classic look at Leipzig covers this pivotal battle, the maneuvers that led up to it, and the retreat that followed. At Hanau, the Bavarians learned to their dismay the Napoleon was still the master of the battlefield. Includes the campaigns of Marshal Davout in the north and the fate of the besieged French fortresses. This edition includes a new set of images and newly-commissioned color maps. $24.00 USD

Rorke's Drift and Isandlwana: 22nd January 1879: Minute by Minute In the morning on 22 January 1879, 20,000 Zulus overwhelmed the British invading force at Isandlwana in one of the greatest disasters ever to befall a British army. Includes 16 pages of color plates. Later the same day, a Zulu force of around 3,000 warriors turned their attention to a small outpost at Rorke's Drift defended by around 150 British and Imperial troops. The British victory that ensued – against remarkable odds – would go down as one of the most heroic actions of all time. Exposes many of the Victorian myths to reveal great acts of bravery as well as cases of cowardice and incompetence. A brief analysis of the aftermath of the battle and notes on the later careers of the key participants completes this expose of this legendary encounter. $35.00 USD

OMM Discount 15%: Now $29.75 USD.
Verdun 1917: The French Hit Back

Verdun 1917: The French Hit Back Unlike the popular view, the French army did not cease offensive operations after the disastrous Nivelle Offensive of spring 1917 and the subsequent mutinies. Nor did the fighting at Verdun come to an end in 1916. Includes 75 black-and-white illustrations. The successful French counter offensives at the end of that year led to preliminary planning for a two Army operation in 1917 to break out of the Verdun salient and recapture the strategically very significant Briey coal basin. The French Army mutinies of May and June 1917 led to a more limited version of the plan being implemented, with the aim of establishing new lines for a break out in 1918. As for all the books in the Battleground Europe series, it is profusely illustrated and mapped using contemporary and modern material, supported by clear maps to support each of the tours. $30.00 USD

South Pacific Air War: Volume 4 – Buna & Milne Bay, September 1942 Volume Four chronicles aerial warfare in the South Pacific in the critical period between 19 June and 8 September 1942. It can be read alone or as a continuation of the first three volumes that spanned the first six months of the Pacific War, culminating in the Battle of the Coral Sea. Of note, Allied accounts are matched against Japanese records for a truly factual account of the conflict. Two veteran Japanese air groups, the Tainan and No. 4 Kokutai, continued their Herculean struggle against mounting Allied opposition. In the face of continued attrition, Japanese pilots had many notable successes including several coveted aerial victories against B-17s. Then, from August a plethora of fresh Japanese units arrived in theater including the No. 2, No. 6, Chitose, Misawa and Kisarazu Kokutai. $47.00 USD

Arctic Front: The Advance of Mountain Corps Norway on Murmansk, 1941 In 1941, a modern army suddenly swept into that isolated and inhospitable region that was yet to possess the level of importance it would later assume in Cold War polar strategy. The Arctic Front was the northernmost theater in the war waged by Germany against the U.S.S.R.. For a period of four years, German troops from all branches of the Wehrmacht fought side by side with Finnish border guard units. Includes 20 maps. This account of the operation was written by Wilhelm Hess, quartermaster of the Mountain Corps Norway. He draws upon his personal experience of the conditions and actions on the Arctic Front in order to describe and analyze the environment, the sequence of events, and the reasons behind certain decisions. In addition to describing how operations conducted by the Mountain Corps unfolded, Hess provides insight as to how the terrain, the flow of supplies, and the war at sea impacted those operations. $45.00 USD

Sub Hunters: Australian Sunderland Squadrons in the Defeat of Hitler's U-boat Menace – 1942-43 Numbers 10 and 461 Squadrons of the Royal Australian Air Force flew Sunderland flying boats from bases in Wales and Devon as part of RAF Coastal Command; these two sister squadrons flew long-range daylight missions over the eastern Atlantic, patrolling Britain's southwest approaches. They hunted and killed U-boats transiting between their mid-Atlantic hunting grounds and their bases in Bordeaux, and fought furious air battles over the heaving seas of the Bay of Biscay, against Luftwaffe Ju88 long-range fighters tasked specifically with shooting them down. These two Australian squadrons established a combat record second to none. Includes 39 color and black-and-white photos. $45.00 USD
