28mm Vignette of the Heroic Marine Siwash
Siwash the Fighting Marine Duck
The first battalion of the Tenth Marine Regiment had a fighting duck as they fought in the Battle of Taraua in 1943. During the battle, Siwash encountered a Japanese-owned rooster and engaged the enemy rooster.
Siwash was wounded repeatedly by pecks on the head from the enemy rooster. He soon became the victor as he routed the enemy rooster. Siwash refused medical treatment until all the wounded marines of his section were treated.
Siwash was promoted to Sergeant and awarded the purple heart. He also fought in the battles of Saipan and Tinian. After the war, he lived on a farm in the U.S. and worked part-time as a Marine recruiter.
Old Glory now offers this vignette depicting Siwash as he encounters the enemy rooster, as his fellow Marines emerge from the surrounding jungle to witness Siwash's heroic victory.
