General Military:

The Art of War: Great Commanders of the Modern World 17th-20th Centuries

The Art of War: Great Commanders of the Modern World 17th-20th Centuries

Which was the most brilliant of Napoleon's victories? How close did the Duke of Wellington come to losing the battle of Waterloo? What qualities made Stonewall Jackson a battlefield commander of genius? What tactics did Montgomery employ to defeat Rommel at Alamein? How did General Giap's Viet Minh troops inflict defeat on a French army at Dienbienphu, despite the massive artillery superiority of their colonial opponents? The answers to these and a myriad other fascinating questions can be found in The Art of War, a sumptuous chronological survey of the 50 greatest commanders of the early modern and modern worlds. The Art of War is an authoritative and lavishly illustrated account of the lives and careers of the 50 greatest military commanders of the period, from Cromwell to Konev, from Marlborough to Moltke, and from Petain to Patton. Every commander is profiled in a concise and informative 3,000-word article which not only brings its subject vividly to life via a lively, fact-driven narrative, but also analyses and assesses his tactical and strategic gifts. Each biography is accompanied by a battle feature or campaign feature – embellished by a full-color battle plan or campaign map – focusing on the commander's greatest battlefield achievement. As accessible and informative as it is rigorous and scholarly, The Art of War is the perfect introduction to its subject for the layperson – but also a stimulating and thought-provoking read for those with greater knowledge of military history. One volume, 446 pages, 2009 U.K., Quercus.

My Share of the Task: A Memoir

My Share of the Task: A Memoir

In this illuminating memoir, McChrystal frankly explores the major episodes and controversies of his eventful career. He delves candidly into the intersection of history, leadership, and his own experience to produce a book of enduring value.

Joining the troubled post-Vietnam army as a young officer, McChrystal witnessed and participated in some of our military's most difficult struggles. He describes the many outstanding leaders, he served with and the handful of bad leaders, he learned not to emulate. He paints a vivid portrait of the traditional military establishment that turned itself, in one generation, into the adaptive, resilient force that would soon be tested in Iraq, Afghanistan and the wider War on Terror.

War of 1812:

Paper Wars: Issue 78 – Rockets Red Glare 1812

Usually sells online for $225 USD-$275 USD – we are offering it at a discounted price of $98 USD!

Rockets Red Glare is a two-player game-type simulation of the War of 1812 in North America on the strategic and operational levels. The entire war is covered in quarterly turns corresponding to seasons, with strategic level play, occurring on a map of the United States East & Gulf coasts, as well as some interior areas and the associated coastal seas. Operational level play is also in quarterly turns and takes place on a map of the Great Lakes border area between the United States and Canada. One player controls the forces of the United States, and a second player controls the forces of England and Canada. Each game turn is composed of both a strategic turn, played on the strategic U.S. map, followed by an operational turn, played on the operational Great Lakes map. Every Fall game turn a special inter-turn phase, is played after the conclusion of the operational turn to set up events for the upcoming year.

Rockets Red Glare is both a naval and a land combat game. The war itself was one of those strange affairs that started due to poor political decisions, and ended due to lack of militarily significant results and the slow realization that it had all been a mistake anyway. The long term results, however, were important. The United States ceased to be a breakaway English colony in the eyes of the world, and most particularly England. Canada was turned permanently away from the path of the American republic, to move slowly down its own course to independence. Rockets Red Glare depicts the military aspects of this key turning point in the history of North America. The game has 255 counters, a 22 x 28 map sheet of the combat areas including charts and tables, and a set of rules to play the game. One volume, one page, 2013 U.S., Compass Games.

The Encyclopedia of Tanks and Armored Fighting Vehicles

The Encyclopedia of Tanks & Armored Fighting Vehicles

Warriors have long sought to combine protection and mobility in combat, from ancient chariots to medieval knights and armored wagon. It was the development of the internal combustion engine that allowed a vehicle to possess both features on the battlefield. The Encyclopedia of Tanks and Armored Fighting Vehicles is a definitive guide to over 1500 armored vehicles that have emerged from the first gasoline engine to the present day. In 1916, during World War I, the tank made its debut on the Western Front for the British, and the face of warfare changed almost overnight. In each nation's quest for battlefield dominance, many different types of armored vehicles have been produced, some more successful than others, all of which are covered in the encyclopedia, with each entry being accompanied by a photograph or artwork, full specifications and a development and career history. The book is divided into sections by country, with entries arranged chronologically. A detailed index is provided for easy cross-referencing. With such in-depth coverage of the subject, this is an essential reference guide for anyone interested in the history of military vehicles. One volume, 545 pages, 2002 U.K., Spellmount.

WWI:

Gallipoli Diary

Gallipoli Diary

The Great War was among the very pugnacious and inhumane battles in the history of humankind. Millions of people died and the disaster was complicated by the circumstance that these were all men who were very young. They both went through substantial damages and this battle is also noteworthy for being among in which innumerable new and dreadful weaponries were made known by both to kill one another.

Gallipoli Diary, created by John Graham Gillam, is some of the countless subjective accounts penned by the fighters of this blood-spattered war. Produced in 1918, when recollections of the battle were still new in the thoughts of those who had suffered from it, it is in reality a portion of history for contemporary book lovers who chance upon it almost 100 years after.

John Graham Gillam was a juvenile supply officer of the British Army. Although he did not take part of the real combat, his squadron was in command of safeguarding that the units got food and weaponries in their troughs. His narrations are exemplified by his necessity to bear witness to the incidents and document them as they transpired. The absolute devastation and pointlessness of the clash are what persist in the peruser's thoughts in the last pages, and up to the next generations perceive from the teachings of history, they are fated to reprise it. One volume, 341 pages, 1989 U.S., Strong Oak Press.

The Alexander Memoirs 1940-1945: Field Marshal Earl Alexander of Tunis

The Alexander Memoirs 1940-1945: Field Marshal Earl Alexander of Tunis

After his first meeting with General Alexander in August 1942, Lieutenant General Sir Brian Horrocks wrote that, by repute, he was Winston Churchill's fire brigade chief par excellence – the man who was always dispatched to retrieve the most desperate situations.

Churchill was indeed in need of a fire brigade chief. Allied forces had been chased back across the desert by Rommel. Alexander bought a new hope to the famed Desert Rats: he instilled them with his own confidence and thought of victory. Under his command, Montgomery was ready to fight and win the Battle of El Alamein. Even as his generals drove the enemy from North Africa, Alexander was planning far ahead for Sicily and Operation Husky, the first major seaborne invasion by either side during the war.

It was said that before El Alamein, the Allies never knew victory, and after El Alamein, they never knew defeat. Much of the credit for that belongs to Alexander. For decades, his contribution to the British efforts in both wars has been overlooked. Here, however, is a comprehensive edition of his personal and candid memoirs, which includes judgments on such men as Montgomery, Patton and Churchill. He also details his role in leading the withdrawal of the 1st Infantry Division at Dunkirk, his dealings with Stilwell in Burma, and the bombing of the abbey at Monte Cassino. One volume, 210 pages, 1962 U.S., McGraw-Hill Book Company.

Great Campaigns of World War II

Great Campaigns of World War II

WWII was a global conflict in every sense of the term. The struggle for mastery of the world affected every continent, and the destinies of millions of people hinged on the great turning points of the war. These were the major battles waged by the Allies and their enemies in the Atlantic and the Pacific seas, in the skies over Britain, in the deserts of North Africa, and the plains of Europe. Each one was crucial to the outcome of the war itself. This book is a study of five of such battles. One volume, 320 pages, 1984 U.S., Finsbury Books.

Guadalcanal: Starvation Island

When the Marines' campaign to wrest the remote Southwest Pacific island of Guadalcanal from the Japanese began in August 1942, few knew how to conduct it – and no one expected it to last six months. Pictorial History of the German Navy in World War II

Pictorial History of the German Navy in World War II

This book charts the development of the Navy, describing the secret building programs that contravened the Treaty of Versailles, and the struggles over policy that determined the size and composition of the fleet when war broke out in 1939. The author shows that the Navy was not ready when war came, despite the secret preparations: Hitler was too aggressive for the admirals, who had not expected to fight a war until the 1944-48 period. Contains more than 300 black-and-white photographs. This is the revised edition. One volume, 368 pages, 1976 U.S., Crowell Books.

Based on individual interviews and wartime documents, this is a thrilling narrative of the Marines who lived, and died, during the toughest battles of the entire war. It looks at the war through the eyes of some of the greatest fighter pilots of all time, including Bob Hanson, the Maharajah of Rabaul and highest-scoring Corsair pilot in history. The Battle of Leyte Gulf: 23-26 October 1944

The Battle of Leyte Gulf: 23-26 October 1944

The last great naval battle of World War II, Leyte Gulf also is remembered as the biggest naval battle ever fought anywhere, and this book has been called the best account of it ever written. First published in hardcover on the battle's 50th Anniversary in 1994, and drawing on materials not previously available, it blends history with human drama to give a real sense of what happened, despite the mammoth scope of the battle. Every facet of naval warfare was involved in the struggle that engaged some 200,000 men and 282 American, Japanese, and Australian ships over more than a hundred thousand square miles of sea. That Tom Cutler succeeded at such a difficult task is no surprise. The award-winning author saw combat service aboard many types of ships during his naval career, and as a historian and professor of strategy and policy at the Naval War College, he has studied the battle for many years. Cutler captures the milieu, analyzes the strategy and tactics employed, and re-creates the experiences of the participants-from seaman to admiral, both Japanese and American. It is a story replete with awe-inspiring heroism, failed intelligence, flawed strategy, brilliant deception, great controversies, and a cast of characters with names like Halsey, Nimitz, Ozawa, and MacArthur. One volume, 343 pages, 1994 U.S., Harper Collins.

History of the RAF

History of the RAF

The RAF was probably the most illustrious flying unit to participate in World War II. Its origins in the Royal Flying Corps gave the nascent Royal Air Force experience which it put to good use a generation later. From the early Spads and Sopwiths which fought against the Fokkers of the Richofen Squadron over France, pilots and the manufacturers of aircraft in Britain learned some valuable lessons. Although the RFC was a colorful adjunct to trench warfare in 1914-18, the use of aircraft in the next war was seen by most observers to be far from peripheral. The Spitfires and Hurricanes which were developed in the 1930s were to save Britain in her finest hour. The Lancaster bombers of the RAF were to make fiery infernos of the cities of Germany in the strategic bombing offensive which followed the Battle of Britain.

In World War II, the RAF distinguished itself in every theater of the conflict. This book and the technical qualities of British warplanes from World War I to the present day is told by Chaz Bowyer, whose 26-year career in the RAF and 13 books on the subject rank him among the foremost experts. One volume, 224 pages, 1977 U.K., Bison Books Ltd.

Thunderbirds at War is a solitaire game, based on the operational diaries of RCAF 426 Sq. during its first five months of night operations from January to June 1943.

The game recreates events without excessive technical considerations and favors storytelling. The player chooses his crew, allocates points representing pilot/crew abilities, and, having assessed his strengths and weaknesses, chooses his flight path to the target. Tables and tracks printed on the map sheet provide quick access to information needed and action outcomes. Random events are revealed during flight as are encounters with Luftwaffe and flak. The player is called upon to make life-and-death decisions every step of the way, in short, managing mayhem. Nothing in the game is scripted. Most missions play in five to 15 minutes. It is as close as you can get to flying over the Ruhr in a Wellington without climbing into a cockpit. One volume, one page, 2014 U.S., Compass Games.

The Rise & Fall of an American Army: U.S. Ground Forces in Vietnam, 1965-1973

The Vietnam War remains deep in the nation's consciousness. It is vital that we know exactly what happened there – and who made it happen. This book provides a complete account of American Army ground combat forces – who they were, how they got to the battlefield, and what they did there. Year by year, battlefield by battlefield, the narrative follows the war in extraordinary, gripping detail. Over the course of the decade, the changes in fighting and in the combat troops themselves are described and documented. The Rise and Fall of an American Army represents the first total battlefield history of Army ground forces in the Vietnam War, containing much previously unreleased archival material. It re-creates the feel of battle with dramatic precision. One volume, 411 pages, 1985 U.S., Presidio Press.

The Elephant & the Tiger: The Full Story of the Vietnam War

The Elephant & the Tiger: The Full Story of the Vietnam War

In this account into the events of the Vietnam War, the author contends that the skill and bravery of the U.S. armed forces was undermined by duplicitous and wrong-headed leadership from Washington. The failure of the political and military commands to appreciate the lasting effects of the geopolitical history of this troubled region led to fatal misunderstandings. One volume, 703 pages, 1990 U.S., Hippocrene Books.

Summons of the Trumpet: U.S.-Vietnam in Perspective

Summons of the Trumpet: U.S.-Vietnam in Perspective

A history of American military involvement in Vietnam traces the course of American intervention from 1954 and the first advisors, through the era of escalation, to the final departure in the 1970s. Soldier/scholar Palmer traces the history of the American involvement in Vietnam, and shows how events in both the U.S. and Vietnam became inextricably linked as domestic dissent and a lack of realistic, viable military strategy ultimately led to America's first lost war. One volume, 277 pages, 1978 U.S., Presidio Press.
