To reduce their reliance upon paid mercenaries, Niccolo Machiavelli suggested to the Republican government of Florence that they instead reorganize and equip a City Militia, drawn from men of age in the city and around it. This 'Milizia Cittadina' numbered around 5,000 trained men to be called upon, divided into about 30 companies and subdivided into 'flags'. Pikemen, swords and arquebus, along with mounted lance and crossbow, commanded by nobles, and with the support of limited artillery. Serving up to and including the 1527 siege of the city by Emperor Charles I.
Alternative Armies' huge range of 15mm Renaissance miniatures, scenics, personalities and more, expands once more with two dozen new miniatures – this time, the Florentine City Militia (1495-1530), a force never before seen in this scale. For use with Furioso and its expansion, The Italian Wars. All miniatures are singles or small sets, with choice inside them of singles too.
Here is the new code list for Florentine City Militia (FCM). These follow up on our Florentine Mercenaries (infantry, cavalry, command and artillery), and join up with them perfectly. Uniform details are taken from the excellent Osprey Men at Arms 536, pages 20-21 and Plate C.
