The Great Illyrian Revolt: Rome's Forgotten War in the Balkans, AD 6-9 cover

The Great Illyrian Revolt: Rome's Forgotten War in the Balkans, AD 6-9 Lesser known than the rebellion that included the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest in 9AD, the Illyrian rebellion occurred in the western Balkans (an area roughly corresponding to modern Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Slovenia, Montenegro, and parts of Serbia and Albania) and it tested the Roman Empire to its limits. For three years, 15 legions fought in the narrow valleys and forest-covered crags of the Dinaric Mountains in a ruthless war of attrition against an equally ruthless and determined foe, and yet this conflict is largely unknown today. Examines the history and culture of the mysterious Illyrian people, the story of how Rome became involved in this volatile region, and what the Roman army had to face during those harrowing three years in the Balkans. Includes four maps and 10 black-and-white illustrations. $35.00 USD

Godley: The Man Behind the Myth Comprehensive biography of General Sir Alexander Godley, presenting for the first time a fair and balanced look at his time as commander of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force (NZEF) and II ANZAC Corps during World War I. While Godley is generally remembered as being a poor field commander, Terry Kinloch argues that he was in fact a capable one who had little or no ability to influence the failed battles at Gallipoli and Passchendaele that he is often seen as responsible for. Kinloch also presents, for the first time, a detailed account of Godley's long pre- and post-World War I career in the British Army. After the war, Godley returned to the British Army, eventually reaching the rank of general before retiring in 1933. During his 48-year military career, he also served on operations in Rhodesia and South Africa, as a mounted infantry instructor, in the post-war British occupation force in Germany, and as the Governor of Gibraltar. $35.00 USD

Includes 20 black-and-white photographs and 20 maps. Also explores how the extent of foreign intervention on both sides has been greatly exaggerated throughout history, and provides the first accurate information on this military intervention, using British and French archives to produce a radically different but more accurate account of the battles and the factors and men who shaped them. $33.00 USD
