Baccus Painting Demo:
"How DO you paint something so small?

A view from the rear of the Roman Line about to get a bit of grief from the Celtic Warbands - 6mm figures from Baccus

There is one single topic of conversation that dominates when I take my stand to wargames shows - How do you paint something so small? In general, people are simply curious as they feel that such feats with a paintbrush would be beyond them. In many cases it is often a huge barrier to actually trying out small-scale miniatures, as they feel that their eyesight and skills are not up to the job. The truth of the matter is that my 6mm miniatures are actually as easy, if not easier to paint than their 15mm and 25mm brethren. However, no matter how plausibly this is explained, many move on still unconvinced, or are just too nervous to have a go.

Now my normal reaction to the statement that, I cannot paint anything so small, is, If you have never tried to paint 6mm how do you know that you can't do it? The usual repsonse to this is confusion. In an attempt to put my money where my mouth is, and to provide some entertainment, I will be running a participation event with a difference at the Old Glory World Championships in Derby over the weekend the 4th and 5th October.

The aim is to get two complete 6mm armies painted and based over the course of the weekend. There will be four sessions on both days, each lasting no more than an hour, during which individuals will have opportunity to take a wargames unit from undercoat to completion. All the figures, paints, brushes etc. will be provided as will painting guides and full instruction on the techniques that will need to be used to paint the miniatures. It will also be non-judgemental - 6mms are very forgiving on those of us who are not expert painters and there are no winners or losers - the aim is for those taking part to have a good time.

There will be 48 places available over the weekend, but if you don't get a place, I think that the format will still provide good spectator sport.

Each person taking part in the painting sessions will receive one raffle ticket per session. At the end of the weekend the completed armies will be raffled off to two participants.

All are welcome to have a go. This is not limited at all in any way, as I am working on a first-come, first-served basis for each session. I will be holding places open for people to turn up on the day, but if you do want to reserve a place, please contact me directly at baccus6@aol.com

This participation is not necessarily aimed at those who already paint 6mm miniatures. I would be particularly pleased to see any of you who really don't think that they can paint 6mm figures, but are prepared at least to have a go. After all, it won't cost you anything and you may win a wargames army! If you have ever thought that you, Can't paint anything so small - well here is a chance to prove your point one way or the other.
