A FACE LIKE A CHICKEN'S BACKSIDE: An Unconventional Soldier in South East Asia, 1948-71

A Face Like a Chicken's Backside: An Unconventional Soldier in South East Asia, 1948-71

Details British officer John Cross's almost 40 years in Asia without a home posting. He spent eight years as a company commander with the Gurkhas in Malaya fighting jungle operations against the Communists. After that, he took part in the attempt to end 20 years of guerrilla domination over the aborigines in north Malaya, and secured the territory between Thailand and the aboriginal population that had been occupied and used by the guerrillas. Commanded the Gurkha Independent Parachute Company, which had to operate like paras, SAS men, and conventional soldiers, during the latter part of the Indonesian Confrontation with Malaya. Finally, Cross was the last commander of the British Army's Jungle Warfare School, which trained officers and men from five continents. After, he was asked to work in both the Royal Thai Army and the Army of the Republic of Vietnam. Instead, he became Defense Attache in Laos. Contains 16 pages of black-and-white plates. $50.00 USD

A MILITARY LIFE OF CONSTANTINE THE GREAT

A Military Life of Constantine the Great

Analysis of the strengths, organization, weapons, tactics and military reforms of Constantine. Assesses whether Constantine would have deserved the title 'the Great' for his military achievements alone, or whether the epithet depends upon the gratitude of Christian historians. Covers all of his campaigns. Much of Constantine I's claim to lasting fame rests upon his sponsorship of Christianity. Many works have been published assessing whether his apparent conversion was a real religious experience or a cynical political maneuver. However, his path to sole rule of the Roman Empire depended more upon the ruthless application of military might than upon his espousal of Christianity. He fought numerous campaigns, many of them against Roman rivals for Imperial power, most famously defeating Maxentius at the Battle of the Milvian Bridge. Contains 20 black-and-white illustrations. $30.00 USD

TRUE FOR THE CAUSE OF LIBERTY: The Second Spartan Regiment in the American Revolution

True for the Cause of Liberty: The Second Spartan Regiment in the American Revolution

Uses battlefield terrain analysis and the words of the officers and common soldiers, from pension records and little-known interviews, to bring to life the crucial role of one militia regiment – the Second Spartans of South Carolina – that fought in virtually every action of the vicious back-country war that decided the fate of America. Details how the Loyalist militia was virtually destroyed at King's Mountain, the battle that Lord Clinton, the British commander in chief, said was 'the first link in a chain of events that followed each other in regular succession until they at last ended in the total loss of America.' Other defeats at Blackstock's Farm and Cowpens, and a Pyrrhic victory at Guilford Courthouse, gutted the British Southern Army and drove Cornwallis north to encirclement and surrender at Yorktown. Discusses brutal warfare between Patriots and Loyalists. Contains 16 pages of photos. $25.00 USD

BULLET STRIKES FROM THE FIRST DAY OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION

Bullet Strikes From the First Day of the American Revolution

Using forensic techniques straight out of CSI, the authors have located the surviving bullet holes and bullet-struck artifacts from the battle that started the American Revolution and explores what happened that day. The whole route back to Boston, as the British fled their defeat at North Bridge, was riddled with musket fire. Dramatic scenes unfolded in places like Concord, Lincoln, Lexington and Arlington that can still be visited today. The fighting turns out to have been much more fierce than had previously been thought. Contains 180 color photos and illustrations. $36.00 USD

BADEN POWELL'S FIGHTING POLICE – The SAC: The Boer War Unit That Inspired the Scouts

Baden Powell's Fighting Police – The SAC: The Boer War Unit That Inspired the Scouts

Rejecting Army models of command, Baden-Powell creates the South African Constabulary (SAC) in August 1900 with a small number of officers, dividing it into Troops of 100 men, then sub-dividing again into sections and the key working unit – the squad of six men under a corporal. To get the caliber of recruit he wants, the SAC will be better paid than the Army, and he expects the men to be motivated by a code of honor, to be self-reliant and 'handy men' able to tackle any kind of work. Most recruits come from the U.K., but in Canada, however, the Governor General intervenes and botches selection. Analyzes creation, development and effectiveness of the SAC, and also highlights what Baden-Powell brought from the SAC and gave anew to the Scouts. $33.00 USD

VERGELTUNGSWAFFEN: The Third Reich's V-Missiles – Then and Now

Vergeltungswaffen: The Third Reich's V-Missiles – Then and Now

Examines Germany's innovative V-weapons. Looks at the V1, which was a cruise missile, and the effect it had on Churchill and England; then the V2, which was a large liquid-fueled rocket, fired against Paris and London. The last months of World War II, when Germany was on the defensive on all fronts and desperately looking for 'wonder weapons,' saw a number of ineffective, albeit innovative, technical developments. Among them were the HDP and the Rheinbote, the third and fourth V-Weapons, which were launched into battle in small numbers. Contains 20 color illustrations and 280 mono illustrations. $40.00 USD

BEHIND THE WIRE: The Road to Oflag VIIB Eichstatt – The PoW Diaries of Captain John Blomfield Dixon, 1940-45

Behind the Wire: The Road to Oflag VIIB Eichstatt – The PoW Diaries of Captain John Blomfield Dixon, 1940-45

Autobiography of a World War II English prisoner of war, compiled from a series of scrapbooks, folders, maps, photographs, documents and a small pile of booklets, revealing his voracious appetite in describing his training, life and death during the retreat to Dunkirk, his humiliating capture by the enemy at the culmination of the Battle of Cassel, and the long, arduous journey through a series of Offizierslagers, which would, ultimately, lead him to Oflag VIIB, which was located in the Bavarian town of Eichstatt. Provides insight into the long, tedious days, miserable food shortages, his thoughts for home, the woman he loved, his hatred for both captors and captives, the killing of his comrades both on and off the battlefield, the tireless efforts and disasters of escape, and his passion for the theatrical life, which was borne out on dusty prison camp stages, all of which provide a picture of his experiences and emotions. His views and opinions on the wild and inaccurate rumors, as well as propaganda relayed through both the German and Allied press, paint an oft-distorted picture of the war's progression at that time.

Combined with a narrative lifted from both official records of the period, and the recollections of men who served or were imprisoned with him, the carefully selected entries not only provide one of the most detailed pictures of life at Oflag VIIB, but also serve to memorialize the service of John Blomfield Dixon and those with whom he shared his incarceration. Contains integrated images and an eight-page color section. $50.00 USD

SPITFIRE GROUNDCREW UNDER FIRE: An RAF 'Erk's' War from the Battle of Britain to D-Day and Operation Bodenplatte

Spitfire Groundcrew Under Fire: An RAF 'Erk's' War from the Battle of Britain to D-Day and Operation Bodenplatte

Examines how RAF groundcrew kept Spitfires flying under fire, ensuring pilots could battle the enemy. The bond between pilots and their groundcrew was often an immensely powerful one. Each day they took to the sky, the pilots put their lives in the hands of the fitters to keep their engines at maximum efficiency, the riggers who maintained the airframe and refueled the aircraft, or the armourers who serviced the guns and loaded the bombs. The ground crew, the 'Erks', were only too aware of the responsibility they bore. Everything had to be done correctly, often under enormous time pressures and far from ideal conditions. Specifically looks at one groundcrew's perspective during D-Day. Contains 120 illustrations. $40.00 USD

After a 600 km ride, the first Soviet armored points reached the Oder, the last major natural obstacle before Berlin. From February 25, the German high command considered counterattacking. The objective is twofold. First, on the military level, re-establish the defense of the Oder by striking the enemy's flanks and on the political level, the sector seemed conducive to a welcome success in the catastrophic context of February 1945. Operation Gemse – a classic pincer movement around Lauban – engaged two Panzerkorps and began on March 1. Operation Gemse 1945 simulates the Soviet attack on Lauban and the subsequent German counterattack.
