Each to their own taste, but in this instance, agree with Henry Martini, real history is strange enough on it's own, and really does not need 'what ifs'.

After all, the 'what ifs' are what give us licence to play our games :-)

World at War #67: Second Battle of Changsha Second Battle of Changsha is a two-player, operational-level game of the September to October 1941 battle for Changsha, China, capital of the Hunan Province. The first Battle of Changsha had been fought in 1939 as part of the Second Sino-Japanese War and resulted in Changsha being the first Chinese city to successfully repel the Japanese advance. The second battle in 1941 resulted in the city being captured (after most of it was destroyed in a fire) by the Japanese, and then being recaptured by the Chinese 9th Army Group commanded by Gen. Xue Yue. The third battle was originally intended by the Japanese to gain control of the city and prevent Chinese forces from reinforcing the British forces engaged in the defense of Hong Kong. When Hong Kong fell on 25 December, the Japanese decided to continue the offensive to gain control of Changsha thereby dealing a major blow to the Chinese war effort. Components: 22 x 34-inch map, 280 die-cut counters. Most ground units represent battalions and regiments. Each hex is 3km across, and each game turn represents one to two days. $40.00 USD

The Fall of Rorke's Drift: An Alternate History of the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879 After that brutal defeat on 22 January 1879 at Isandlwana, the British Army is at Rorke's Drift on the Buffalo River in Natal Province, South Africa. A few hundred British and colonial troops led by Lieutenants John Chard of the Royal Engineers and Gonville Bromhead face the might of the Zulu army of thousands led by Prince Dabulamanzi kaMpande (CORR). Against the odds, the British are victorious and this defeat marks the end of the Zulu nation's dominance of the region. But what if the Zulus had defeated the British at Rorke's Drift and invaded Natal? In this alternate history of the Anglo-Zulu War, historian John Laband offers a tantalizing glimpse of a very different outcome, weaving a compelling and never-before-told story of what could have been. $35.00 USD

Operation Totalize By early August 1944, the Germans fighting in Normandy had been worn down by the battles around Caen, while to the west, the American breakout was finally gaining momentum. Now was the time to launch II Canadian Corps south towards Falaise. With much of the German armor having been stripped away for the Mortain Counter-Attack, hopes ran high that the Corps, reinforced with British tanks, the 51st Highland and the Polish Armored Divisions, would repeat the success of their predecessors in the Battle of Amiens. An innovative change of tactics to a night armored assault and the conversion of 72 self-propelled guns to armored personnel carriers for the accompanying infantry was very successful, but up against their implacable foes, 12th Hitlerjugend SS Panzer Division, the pause for bombing allowed Kurt 'Panzer' Meyer to deploy his division. Consequently, when the 4th Canadian and Polish Armored Divisions were launched into their first battle, they made frustratingly little progress. As the Canadians advanced over the following days, the battle degenerated into a costly fight for ground as the Hitlerjugend struggled to contain the inexperienced Poles and Canadians. $23.00 USD

Red Wind Over the Balkans: The Soviet Offensive South of the Danube, September-October 1944

Red Wind Over the Balkans: The Soviet Offensive South of the Danube, September-October 1944 Describes two Soviet offensive operations carried out during September and October 1944. The first was the operation for the occupation of Bulgaria – known as the Bulgarian Operation; the second was the Belgrade offensive operation, which was carried out immediately after the Bulgarian Operation. Although separate, the two operations were closely linked to each other – the first was conducted in an almost peaceful manner, which saved resources. This necessitated that the Soviet Command carried out the second operation promptly, which seriously endangered the encirclement of German Army Group position in the Southern Balkans. Pressed by the advancing Red Army, the German troops withdrew from the territories of Greece and Albania. They also relocated fresh forces from the Western Balkans to the Bulgarian-Yugoslav border in order to build up a defense line. Includes 403 black-and-white photos, 197 tables, 16 pages of color profiles and illustrations, and 24 color maps. $90.00 USD
