Uniform Guides…

German Army Uniforms of World War II: A Photographic Guide to Clothing, Insignia and Kit

German Army Uniforms of World War II: A Photographic Guide to Clothing, Insignia and Kit Fully illustrated book examines the German Army's wide range of uniforms, personal equipment, weapons, medals, and awards. Offers a comprehensive guide to the transformation that the German Army soldier underwent in the period from September 1939 to May 1945. After World War I, the defeated and much-reduced German Army developed new clothing and personal equipment that drew upon the lessons learned in the trenches. In place of the wide variety of uniforms and insignia that had been worn by the Imperial German Army, a standardized approach was followed, culminating in the uniform items introduced in the 1930s as the Nazi Party came to shape every aspect of German national life. The outbreak of war in 1939 prompted further adaptations and simplifications of uniforms and insignia, while the increasing use of camouflaged items and the accelerated pace of weapons development led to the appearance of new clothing and personal equipment. $45.00 USD

Military History of Late Rome: Volume 3 – 395-425

Military History of Late Rome: Volume 3 – 395-425 Third volume offers a comprehensive narrative of late Roman military history from AD 284-641. Each volume (five are planned) gives a detailed account of the changes in organization, equipment, strategy, and tactics among both the Roman forces and her enemies in the relevant period, while also giving a detailed but accessible account of the campaigns and battles. Includes, color and black-and-white maps and battle diagrams. This volume analyzes in great detail the pivotal years of 395-425. It was then that the mighty Roman Empire faced the Great Migrations while being wracked by civil wars. In 395 the task of defending the Roman Empire fell on the great generalissimos Stilicho. He faced a series of hostile bureaucrats, emperors, usurpers, and foreign foes until he was killed in a conspiracy in 409. His death led to an event that shook up the Empire to its very core: the sack of Rome by Alaric's Visigoths in 410. Meanwhile, the East Romans survived the civil wars and faced the Germans, Huns, and Persia successfully. Explains how the East Romans fended off foes and was able to take control of West Rome in 425. $53.00 USD

Armies of Ancient Italy 753-218 BC: From the Foundation of Rome to the Start of the Second Punic War

Armies of Ancient Italy 753-218 BC: From the Foundation of Rome to the Start of the Second Punic War Before becoming the masters of the Mediterranean world, the Romans had first to conquer the Italian peninsula in a series of harsh conflicts against its other varied and warlike residents. The outcome was no foregone conclusion and it took the Romans half a millennium to secure the whole of Italy. Includes 80 color and black-and-white illustrations. Presents the armies that fought these wars, in which the Roman military spirit and their famous legions were forged. Follows the evolution of the Roman forces from the Regal period to the outbreak of the Second Punic War, as well as the forces of their neighbors, rivals and enemies. The most notable of these, the Etruscans, Samnites, and the Italian Greeks are given particular attention but others, such as the Celts and Ligures of the North and the warriors of Sicily and Sardinia, are also considered. Details of the organization, weapons, equipment and tactics of each army are described. Color Photos of reenactors show how these warriors looked in the field. $43.00 USD

The Armies of Sir Ralph Hopton: The Royalist Armies of the West 1642-46

The Armies of Sir Ralph Hopton: The Royalist Armies of the West 1642-46 Nothing sums up the tragedy of the English Civil War more than the friendship between Sir Ralph Hopton and the parliamentarian general Sir William Waller as this war without an enemy. Hopton was one of the first commanders to support the king and helped secure Cornwall for the Royalist Cause. Describes the life and death of a soldier during the Civil War. Chapters include recruitment, clothing, equipping and training of Hopton's armies, as well as his campaigns, including those of Prince Maurice, Sir Richard Grenville and George Lord Goring. It also looks at the divisions within the royalist high command which ultimately lost King Charles the war. It also looks at what happened to these soldiers once the fighting was over. Italy, Piedmont and the War of Spanish Succession: 1701-1712 The War of Spanish Succession is well known in English concerning Flanders and Germany, but not that much concerning Spain, and not at all about Italy. The Italian front was so important that the French considered it as important as the German one, and committed there their best generals. William III considered it to be far more important than Spain, and, in spite of having no British army there, after King William's death, London committed 1/10 of her war expenses to it. It was considered so important in Vienna that the Emperor sent his best general there. Last, it was the front where all the French hopes to subject Europe died in Turin in 1706 after the first dramatic loss they suffered after Blenheim in 1704. Includes 185 black-and-white illustrations, maps and plans, 16-pages color plates. $50.00 USD

The other two volumes to be published are The Army of Alexander the Great and The Sieges of Alexander the Great. $27.00 USD

Turret Versus Broadside: An Anatomy of British Naval Prestige, Revolution and Disaster 1860-1870 Analysis of the great turret vs. broadside debate sheds new light on how the most well-funded and professional navy in the world, at the height of its power, could nevertheless build an inherently unstable capital ship – the low-freeboard yet fully-masted ironclad HMS Captain that capsized in 1870. Includes 46 color and black-and-white illustrations. Uses an impressive array of government reports, contemporary periodicals, and unpublished personal papers. Provides a long-term and international context to this debate amidst a growing emphasis upon new technologies of ever-heavier guns and ever-thicker armor. $50.00 USD

The Rescue They Called A Raid: The Jameson Raid 1895-96 125 years ago, Leander Starr Jameson sought to expand the British Empire in South Africa with the backing of a mere 500 men. He was part of a conspiracy of entrepreneurs, gold magnates, and politicians, each of whom had different motives for supporting and encouraging his actions. His raid failed miserably. It almost brought down the British Government, destroyed the career of one of the most eminent South African Statesmen, nearly caused a war with the South African Republic, and exposed Britain to international ridicule. Includes 43 black-and-white illustrations, 1 color plate, and 4 black-and-white maps. $40.00 USD

Details their development, analyzes their design characteristics, and offers their operational histories, particularly those actions against other ships at Mers el-Kebir, Dakar, and Casablanca. These accounts include a detailed analysis of their performance in action and the damage sustained, and are supported by specially-drawn maps and by the logs of Strasbourg and Richelieu. Includes 22 color profile and plan views. $35.00 USD
