MDF is one of the most hobby-friendly materials you can work with. It soaks up primer evenly, holds paint well, and gives you a solid base for just about any finishing technique you'd use on your terrain or models.
Start with a primer coat – spray or brush-on both work fine. From there, the footprint is yours. Dry brush it to match your basing scheme, apply texture paste for a gritty ground effect, or go all in with flock, tufts, and static grass to blend it seamlessly into your battle mat.
