OK, this is being a rivet counter, but that Sherman is not from Leclerc's 2eDB.

At a glance, the Consulate style flag on the side means it belongs with those French who entered through the South of France, not Normandy. This tank would have been nowhere remotely near Falaise.

Not that that matters in the slightest, if a good game results, and if folk hear about 2eDB as a result (but they had much better markings and they did liberate Paris after all). Go on, hum the tune if you saw the film…the accordion.

A French Legend

A French Legend

Foret domaniale d' Ecouves Region, France
August 13, 1944

As part of U.S. General Haislip's XV Corp, the French 2nd Armored Division had taken up Patton's drive east to encircle the German forces now becoming congested in the Falaise region of France. Wanting to consolidate gains and gain a staging area for a possible pinch point, General LeCerc is ordered to take the town of Alencon. Against stiffening resistance, the French liberate the city by August 12th, thereby reducing the distance between them and the northern Allied forces under Montgomery to around 55 kilometers. To the north of Alencon, however, is a heavily forested region, and it is here that elements of Panzer Group Eberbach deploys. The heavy forest reduces the Allied advantage in the air, and the tight roads make for excellent ambush points.

Realizing the advantages the forested region gave the German defenders; General LeClerc breaks his division into three groups and starts probing for a weak point. His goal is to break out of the forest and enter the more open region in a drive on the town of Argentan. This, if taken, will nearly close a ring around the defending German 7th Army.
