In my opinion it's worth it. Today I was fooling around with generating countries and think it would be applicable to many modern/near-future/post-apocalyptic settings with no modification. You really don't even need to change anything, other than translate your particular setting and equipment from the generic terms used.

Here's an example – I generated one country that is large and cohesive. It's government is a legitimate democracy but the current administration is deeply unpopular. The nation's economy is stagnant and is primarily based on agriculture. There is little industry and the populace is mainly rural.
The main problems of concern besides the unpopular government is the faltering economy and fears of foreign sabotage. The military is about a generation behind and depends on foreign mercenaries equipped with mainly old Soviet gear. Tanks are in limited numbers, but there are quite a few helicopters for air-mobility.

In 15mm Sci Fi terms I translate this into Khurasan Miniatures Nova Resublik troops for this country. An occasional tank is available, perhaps an antique T-80, but the country has invested in VTOL's for air-mobility purposes. The mercs are lightly equipped and only have limited numbers of heavy weapons, but they need to cover a large territory.
