THE U.S. ARMY, 1783-1811: Defending a New Nation
Explores how the U.S. Army evolved from post-Revolution disarray to a reorganized force ready for the War of 1812. During this era, American soldiers confronted threats from Great Britain, France, and Spain. The Army suppressed civil unrest, built roads, and conducted explorations while in a process of frequent reorganization, from the disbanding of the Continental Army at the end of the Revolutionary War to the establishment of the Legion of the United States, followed by President Thomas Jefferson's efforts at reforming the Army into a Republican institution. These structural changes increased during James Madison's first presidential term, as Americans prepared for war with Great Britain over maritime rights, free trade, and territorial expansion in a conflict that became known as the War of 1812. BRAVE AS A LION: The Life and Times of Field Marshal Hugh Gough, 1st Viscount Gough
Details Hugh Gough, 1st Viscount Gough, an interesting and controversial figure of the late Georgian and early Victorian British Army. It is said he commanded in more battles than any other British soldier of this period, save for the Duke of Wellington. Despite this, there are many who have questioned his command capability and his competence, particularly where the two Sikh Wars are concerned. Attempts to draw out the other periods of his life to gain a greater understanding of his background, experiences and influences. Born into a military tradition, he first wore the King's uniform at the age of thirteen. He saw extensive service during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, and fought in Southern Africa and the Caribbean. During the Peninsular War, he commanded the 87th Foot and was said to have been the most experienced battalion commander of the conflict. He was promoted to major general and appointed to command a battalion in the Madras Army, and eventually rewarded with the appointment of Commander-in-Chief in India. In this capacity, he conquered the Gwalior State and the Sikh Empire and greatly enhanced British India. However, his victories came at a high price in terms of casualties, and he was much criticized for this. Despite this, he never lost a battle. He was loved by his men, largely because he suffered with them and was always willing to share in the danger. Contains 76 color and black-and-white illustrations, and 15 black-and-white maps. $70.00 USD

THE CHESAPEAKE CAMPAIGN, 1813-14
An illustrated account of the Chesapeake campaign, highlighting militia defense, Washington's burning, and American resilience at Baltimore. Details how in early 1813, Britain launched a campaign on the Chesapeake Bay to try and divert American regulars from the Canadian border. Secretary of War John Armstrong chose to rely on local forces and state militias to protect the Chesapeake Bay region. This meant that towns, ports and even the nation's capital were left vulnerable to attack. The failed British attempt to capture Baltimore, combined with a decisive American victory at Plattsburgh, New York, underscored American resilience and contributed to Britain's decision to end the war without any territorial concessions. Contains 80+ photographs, illustrations, and maps. $20.00 USD

STRONG MEN OF THE REGIMENT SOBBED LIKE CHILDREN: John Reynolds' I Corps at Gettysburg on July 1, 1863
Analyzes the fighting on the first day at Gettysburg on July 1, 1863, and the close, vicious and bloody combat from the perspective of the rank-and-file of both armies. In particular, the book looks at Major General John Reynolds' I Corps. By the time the fighting ended, I Corps was in shambles and in pell-mell retreat for Cemetery Hill. Yet its stand, together with the XI Corps north of town, bought precious hours for the rest of the Army of the Potomac to arrive and occupy good defensive ground. Research is based on first-hand exploration of the location and more than 300 primary sources, including letters, diaries, memoirs, newspaper accounts, recollections, casualty lists, and drill manuals. Contains 27 images and 19 regimental-level maps. $27.00 USD

THE OVERLAND CAMPAIGN FOR RICHMOND: Grant vs Lee, 1864
A detailed and fully illustrated account of the Richmond campaign, covering the strategies and tactics employed. Discusses how Lincoln sought a general to put an end to the war, and he found it in Grant. Determined to destroy Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia, Grant bulked up the Army of the Potomac with the addition of Burnside's IX Corps, swelling the army's numbers to nearly 120,000. On May 3, 1864, the Army of the Potomac headed for the Wilderness to open the Spring Campaign, and the next six weeks saw the most brutal fighting of the entire war. While Grant had failed to destroy Lee's army or capture Richmond, the relentless pressure of the campaign effectively sealed the fate of the Confederacy. $25.00 USD

A WAR OF THEIR OWN: FULRO, The Other National Liberation Front, Vietnam 1955-75
In Vietnam, in 1967, William Chickering commanded a Mike Force battalion of Montagnards, highland tribesmen who were also members of a secret army, FULRO, whose aim was to rid the highlands of all Vietnamese, both communist and non-communist. Fighting for land and dignity, they saw the Vietnamese as colonialists and themselves as revolutionaries. Explores the author's journey to understand FULRO and how they mysteriously disappeared. FOR KING AND COUNTRY: The Role of Patriotism in Mobilisation in the First World War
Explores the role of local elites in shaping patriotism and wartime mobilization in rural and urban Britain. A critical examination of the wartime role of the local elite as 'superintendents of patriotism'. Begins with an account of 'khaki fever' leading to 'moral panic' resulting from the attraction of military uniforms and a perceived need for elite guidance and control while expanding mobilization. These attempts to mobilize for military service met with limited success and 'humanitarian' mobilization in the of philanthropy was widespread. Shows the tensions between elites – landed gentry and urban professionals – and the local populations, rural (mostly) and urban. The study analyses orthodox views about mobilization, dissent, and domestic patriotism on the Home Front in the First World War and roles of local elites. Contains 12 mono illustrations. $43.00 USD
