Fred Grant at Vicksburg: A Boy's Memoir at His Father's Side During the American Civil War

Fred Grant at Vicksburg: A Boy's Memoir at His Father's Side During the American Civil War

Edited and annotated account of Frederick Grant's three-month journey to Vicksburg during the U.S. Civil War. Based primarily on the account that Frederick delivered to the National Tribune in 1887, yet adds details from other versions of the adventure that expand on the story. Details how he roamed freely within the army, often not seeing his father for days while living amongst the troops, sharing their rations, and seeing war firsthand. At times hungry, cold and alone, he was also often under fire, slept where he could, was nearly captured, and was lightly wounded in the battle of the Big Black River Bridge. The pre-teen watched Union ships run the Vicksburg batteries, acquired souvenirs, met some of the most notable Americans of the time, and nearly died from dysentery – all the while witnessing and participating in some of the most decisive events of the Civil War. Contains 47 images and two maps. $17.00 USD

From Camp Douglas to Vicksburg: The Civil War Letters of William J. Kennedy, 55th Illinois Infantry, 1861-1863

From Camp Douglas to Vicksburg: The Civil War Letters of William J. Kennedy, 55th Illinois Infantry, 1861-1863

Presents firsthand accounts and letters from William J. Kennedy, who was a second-generation Irish-American born in New York in 1827. Jumped at the chance to recruit and even recruited many of his friends and relatives into Company G of the 55th Illinois Infantry, a new regiment being organized in Chicago under Col. David Stuart. Kennedy played the role of embedded reporter during some of the most momentous events in the Western Theater. His letters to his wife Jane, family members, and friends are often as detailed as newspaper accounts and battle reports. His observations span the gamut, from corruption in the army and the alien culture in Tennessee and Mississippi, to his unyielding confidence in President Lincoln's judgment. Contains previously unseen descriptions of the fighting at Shiloh, the siege of Corinth, the triumphal entry into Memphis, the disaster of Chickasaw Bayou, and the misery of digging canals around Vicksburg. Sadly, it was there that William lost his life. Contains 22 images and three maps. $25.00 USD

The Solitary War of a Sniper: The Authorised Biography of Britain's Most Successful World War II Sniper

The Solitary War of a Sniper: The Authorised Biography of Britain's Most Successful World War II Sniper

The remarkable story of Harry Furness, a young British sniper who fought from D-Day to Germany. Joined the army in 1939 at the age of 16. Having always been captivated by the stories of First World War snipers, he volunteered for sniper training in 1941. He did exceptionally well, qualifying as a marksman whilst a pre-war army cadet and was quickly promoted to lance corporal. Just prior to D-Day, he was promoted to corporal in the Green Howards Regiment and landed at Gold Beach on 6th June 1944. Together, he and his comrades began a hard fight across North-West Europe, gradually moving through Northern France, Belgium, Holland and eventually into Germany as they pushed the Germans back towards the Rhine. The manifold dangers and occasional humor come across in a very matter-of-fact but compelling way in dozens of previously unpublished letters, personal interviews, and images. Contains 16 pages of plates. Due into the shoppe in seven to eight weeks. $40.00 USD

The Man Who Tested Parachutes: Charles Agate & the Development of Britain's Airborne Forces for D-Day & Arnhem

The Man Who Tested Parachutes: Charles Agate & the Development of Britain's Airborne Forces for D-Day & Arnhem

Tells the story of an ordinary man who took extraordinary risks, and the men and women who served alongside him. It also remembers the young recruits who died before they were able to take part in the key battles for which they were being trained. Charles Agate's daring parachute testing at RAF Ringway transformed airborne warfare, while his post-war struggles reveal a complex legacy. By 1940, the Allies had fallen behind the Axis powers in parachute design and research. Other than as a means of escape from a doomed aircraft, the British regarded parachuting as of little military value. All that changed when the Germans used paratroops, the Fallschirmjager, to devastating effect in the invasion of the Low Countries, and Churchill demanded immediate action. Between 1941 and 1945, Agate and his fellow Parachute Jump Instructors (PJIs) completed thousands of jumps, often from low altitude or using prototype parachutes. They jumped carrying heavy kit bags, had sandbags strapped to their legs, and landed in deep freezing water. They also trained thousands of raw recruits for the key airborne operations of the war, as well as over 600 Special Operation Executive agents for dropping into enemy territory, frequently accompanying them as dispatchers on these hazardous flights. Contains 16 mono illustrations. $43.00 USD
