In answer to your questions Brian:

Combat System – The system does offer decision making and tactics with regards to what individual models do.

Positioning is important. There are also a number of other ways to gain an advantage whether that is through Psychological Attacks (e.g. Taunting an enemy towards you or Intimidating them to the point that their characteristics drop) or Forcing the enemy back into friends who can finish the model off. Plus using the terrain to your advantage. The game is very situational so the best course of action will depend on what the environment is that your models are in and their positions, strengths/weaknesses etc. at the time of decision making.

To make a hand-to-hand attack you compare the attackers Attack value vs the defenders Defence value, this tells you whether you roll 1, 2, or 3 dice in attack. When you attack you could fumble, miss, force the opponent back or hit them. You choose a score from the dice you have rolled to apply. Sometimes you may find you want to Force Back an enemy rather than strike a blow. It depends on what you're trying to achieve. There are modifiers and various skills and abilities that you can give to your fighters which may influence the way you play.

WargameVault -I'm aware of the site but haven't got around to looking at it properly yet.

You can download Open Combat direct from the secondthunder.com website. After payment has processed you are presented with a download link.

Hope this helps!

Open Combat Sample Pages

Open Combat – skirmish rules for pre-gunpowder historical (and fantasy) games – launched this month, and is available for the special launch price of £7.50 GBP until 31st October 2014.

Open Combat is a tabletop miniature wargame suitable for any pre-gunpowder historical period or fantasy setting.

It is a fast-paced skirmish-level game that lets you create the heroes, battles and adventures of your imagination.

Open Combat features a Renown system which you use to build your warband. You literally create the characteristics for the members of your warband, adding weapons, skills and abilities to make the fighters your vision of what they represent.

You can use any miniatures you own, free to create the battles and encounters that you want to play with the heroes (and their enemies), as strong (or weak) as you and your opponent choose to make them.

You can guide the ragtag remains of a Roman expeditionary force through barbarian territory, become a Saxon lord with his retinue as they face off against a local rival, or chart the story of a group of adventurers fighting for fortune and glory in a Goblin-infested wilderness. It could be anything you wish to play out on the tabletop.

You only need a 24" x 24" area to play. Games last 30 to 40 minutes, and you only need three regular six-sided dice.

The Open Combat rules are supplied as a 46-page, full-color PDF and are available now.

So give it a try – if your miniature collection and buying habits are anything like the authors', we think you'll like it!
