PANZER IV

PANZER IV Fully illustrated throughout with contemporary photographs, this fascinating study tells the complete story of Germany's most widely produced tank of World War II, from its design and development that started in 1934 to its many upgrades and variants. At first, German planners envisioned the tank in a secondary role, but during the invasions of the Low Countries and France, it took on a more central role. When the Panzerwaffe turned east to attack the Soviet Union, the Panzer IV initially fared poorly against the better-armed T-34. However, upgrades to its gun and armor protection saw it perform far better, not only against Soviet armor but also against British and American tanks in North Africa and Italy. In 1944, it was slowly replaced by the Panzer V Panther, but the dire strategic situation meant that it bore the brunt of the Allied D-Day invasion and its aftermath, and it remained in service until the end of the war. $40.00 USD

THE BATTLESHIP SCHÂRNHORST The Kriegsmarine's Scharnhorst was a German capital ship, described either as a battleship or battlecruiser, and the lead ship of her class, which included one other ship, Gneisenau. She was launched on 3 October 1936 and completed in January 1939, armed with nine 28cm C/34 guns in three triple turrets. She operated with Gneisenau for much of the early portion of World War II, including sorties into the Atlantic to raid British merchant shipping. Includes a complete set of detailed line drawings with fully descriptive keys and full-color 3D artwork, supported by technical details, photographs, and text on the building of the ship, as well as a record of her service history. $60.00 USD

LIFE IN THE RED COAT: The British Soldier 1721-1815

LIFE IN THE RED COAT: The British Soldier 1721-1815 This book presents the proceedings of the 2019 From Reason to Revolution conference, from enlistment, through service at home, to life on campaign and the experience of battle. This was an era in which the social position of the soldier began to change, as did the relationship between the army and society at large. Soldiers saw service against Jacobite rebels in Scotland and anti-Catholic rioters in London. Campaign service overseas stretched from garrison duties in the growing empire to pitched battles in Flanders and the Iberian Peninsula. Lack of indigenous manpower led to the enlistment of foreigners in large numbers into the British Army itself by the end of the period, whereas in earlier days the shortfall had been made up by hiring mercenaries. $45.00 USD

LES ITALIENS DE L'EMPEREUR: Les Armees de la Peninsule Italienne 1800-1815

LES ITALIENS DE L'EMPEREUR: Les Armees de la Peninsule Italienne 1800-1815 This army of the Kingdom of Italy started during Bonaparte's first campaign with the creation of the Lombard and Cisalpine Legions. This army especially featured a greater number of enrolled troops instead of volunteers. The Italian Royal Guard, from the beginning of the century, was the hub around which the Army of the Kingdom of Italy was formed. It took part in the great campaigns of the Empire. The transalpine uniforms often recalled those worn by their French brothers-in-arms. The Army of the Kingdom of Naples (from 1806 to 1815, commanded in succession by Joseph Bonaparte then Joachim Murat) inherited a tradition forged by the Bourbons. The Neapolitan Army, large but unreliable, was entrusted with defending the south of Italy with the French, against the Bourbons and the English; this did not prevent it from being mobilized alongside the French army in Spain or in divisions within the Grande Armee during the Russian Campaign. LES SUISSES AU SERVICE DE LA FRANCE: 1715-1820 Very early on, Switzerland set up a real mercenary business. By capitulations, each canton could recruit military units on behalf of a neighboring state with their own officers and rules. The French Revolution encountered the loyalty of the Swiss in the service of the King of France. The infamous massacre of the Swiss Guard on 10 August 1792 in the Tuileries was the bloodiest. After that, the Swiss regiments in the infantry of the Line were disbanded. France reorganized Europe between 1793 and 1813, and transformed Switzerland, which supplied, not always in the best conditions, its neighbor with troops of great worth to the Revolution and to the Empire. This book deals with the Swiss troops which served the Monarchy, the Republic, the Consulate, the Empire, and the Second Empire. [French text] $30.00 USD

CHINA STATION: The British Military in the Middle Kingdom 1839-1997 Discusses the various wars, military adventures, and rebellions that regularly punctuated Sino-British relationships since the 1st Opium War 1839-1842. This classic example of Imperial intervention saw the establishment of Hong Kong and Shanghai as key trading centers. The Second Opium War and the Taiping and Boxer Rebellions saw the advancement of British influence despite determined but unsuccessful efforts by the Chinese to loosen the grip of Western domination. The Royal Navy's might ensured that, by gunboat diplomacy, trading rights and new posts were established and great fortunes made. But in the 1940s, the British grossly underestimated Japanese military might and intentions, with disastrous results. After the Second World War, the British returned to find that the Americans had supplanted them. The Communist victory in the Civil War sealed British and Western fates and, while Hong Kong remained under British control until 1997, the end of British rule was almost inevitable. $30.00 USD

THE HIGHLAND BATTLES This study provides an account of the series of campaigns and battles that shaped Scotland. The narrative is structured around a number of battles – Skitten Moor, Torfness, Tankerness, Renfrew, Mam Garvia, Clairdon, and Dalrigh – which illustrate phases of the conflict and reveal the strategies and tactics of the rival chieftains. It also considers to what extent the fighting methods of the time survived into the post-medieval period. $43.00 USD

POLISH EYEWITNESSES TO NAPOLEON'S 1812 CAMPAIGN: Advance and Retreat in Russia Describes Napoleon's 1812 invasion of Russia from the viewpoint of the tens of thousands of Polish soldiers who took part. Most of their accounts – letters, diaries, and memoirs – have not been translated into English before, and they come from a variety of authors. Some of them were patriots who were keen to wage war on the Russians in order to regain independence for their country. Others were charmed by the glory of Napoleonic warfare, or were professional soldiers who did their duty but had seen too much war to be seduced by it. $43.00 USD

THE GREAT WAR IN THE ARGONNE FOREST: French and American Battles, 1914-1918 The annals of the First World War record the Argonne Forest as the epicenter of the famous Meuse-Argonne offensive of 1918. The book traces the stories of some of the men – and women – who became embroiled in the epic forest struggle which culminated in the cold, gas-filled autumnal mist of 1918 when the New Yorkers of the 77th 'Liberty' Division fought there. One of their number, Charles Whittlesey, and his 'Lost Battalion' held out against insurmountable odds. Sergeant Alvin York, the Tennessee backwoodsman and pacifist, overcame his religious convictions and wrote himself into American military history. The story does not end there; the author describes the aftermath of war in the area – the lethal outbreak of Spanish flu, the reburial of the dead, the rebuilding of the villages and the replanting of the forest before the Germans invaded again in 1940. $43.00 USD
