Light Infantry of the Greek & Roman World: Forgotten Heroes of Ancient Warfare
Argues that while light infantry might have had a subordinate role in pitched battles, such big battles were relatively rare occurrences. Most ancient campaigns consisted mostly of foraging, raiding, and pillaging of enemy territory, minor skirmishes and ambushes, all roles in which light infantry excelled. In particular, they were indispensable for an army traversing mountainous or forested terrain. Shows that even in pitched battles they were far from useless and made a valuable contribution, typically harassing the enemy as they deployed and screening friendly battle lines from similar treatment. Never A Dull Moment: The 80th Airborne Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion in World War II
Explores the history of the 80th AAA Battalion, which was a glider outfit that provided anti-aircraft defense and anti-tank capability to the division's three infantry regiments as battlefield conditions dictated. Elements of the battalion fought in Italy, Normandy, Holland, and the Battle of the Bulge, making combat glider assaults during both Operation Neptune and Operation Market Garden. The 80th AAA battalion was a hybrid unit. In March 1941, his under-gunned battalion suffered a catastrophic baptism of fire in Libya from 15,000 troops and 500 tanks of Rommel's Afrika Korps. Selected for David Stirling's elite 1 Special Air Service (SAS), he was captured in December 1942 while raiding behind enemy lines. Sent to an Italian POW camp, he suffered the deprivations of captivity. After the September 1943 Italian armistice, he escaped and, after an arduous three-month ordeal, he reached Allied lines thanks to the help of brave locals.
